Nouveau Nvidia Driver Conflict

Post by flexoron » Sun Sep 16, 2018 19:19

Hello,

Since yesterday(see Updated below) the nvidia driver module load process failed and because of this the gdm login session crashed:

kernel: nvidia-nvlink: Nvlink Core is being initialized, major device number 235
kernel: NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine was not called for 1 device(s).
kernel: NVRM: This can occur when a driver such as:
NVRM: nouveau, rivafb, nvidiafb or rivatv
NVRM: was loaded and obtained ownership of the NVIDIA device(s).
kernel: NVRM: Try unloading the conflicting kernel module (and/or
NVRM: reconfigure your kernel without the conflicting
NVRM: driver(s)), then try loading the NVIDIA kernel module
NVRM: again.
kernel: NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter probed!

Workaround to get a gdm session
# eselect opengl set 2
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] nvidia
[2] xorg-x11 *
# eselect opencl set 1
Available OpenCL implementations:
[1] mesa *
[2] nvidia

I don't know how to resolve the issue.

These kernel versions have the problem:
4.14.0-sabayon 4.16.0-sabayon 4.18.0-sabayon
Nvidia version:396.51

Hello,

I'm not sure whether this is a final solution but when I open grub-menu and add the 'blacklist' option, Nvidia driver is back at work:

BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/kernel-genkernel-x86_64-4.18.0-sabayon ...... rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau

Selecting Nvidia again
# eselect opengl set 1
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] nvidia *
[2] xorg-x11
# eselect opencl set 2
Available OpenCL implementations:
[1] mesa
[2] nvidia *

Switch to sabayon-weekly repo and downgrade the kernel to the version in that repo. It worked for me.

No 3D after upgrade.
Kernel versions 4.18.7-sabayon
Nvidia version:396.51

Problem -Nouveau loads on boot despite being uninstalled.

Solution that works for me (BIOS system);
added the rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau in /etc/default/grub;
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau"

ran
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

reboot - 3d is back.

Hello,

@Tedel
I do not understand what you mean..resetting to sabyon-weekly?
My system is based on:
Repository name: sabayon-weekly
Local repository revision: 3832
Latest repository revision: 3832
Updated: Sat Sep 15

I run sabayon-weekly with Kernel 4.16 which is EOL since months.
So why should I downgrade the Kernel?
The only update I got for this Kernel recently, was Virtualbox 5.2.18 modules.

After running into the Problem(15 Sep), I installed Kernel 4.18.7(with all required modules) manually.
And this version shows the same symptom...so something else triggers the defect.

Seems that /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf entry "blacklist nouveau" has no effect anymore.

Maybe module "bbswitch.ko" is involved but I cannot see that(on my system).

Thank you illalien for the howto of making it persistent.
I'm not sure whether this solution is just a workaround or persistent as well? :)

Working on a fix.
People with problems best revert to weekly repo.

Excellent! joost
fyi
A quick-check on my system still does not load nvidia
dracut -H -q -N -f -o systemd -o systemd-initrd -o systemd-networkd -o dracut-systemd --kver=4.18.0-sabayon /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-4.18.0-sabayon

Can you tell if it still conflicts with nouveau then? As in, nouveau kernel mod is still loaded?
lsmod could tell.
