Xorg Errors

Post by lamxuyen1234 » Mon Sep 10, 2018 10:51

Hey guys, this problem has been getting on my nerves, If you want some info, I'll get you info. So I've been trying to find a linux distro to take over my laptop's Windows 7. My laptop is a HP Pavilion G6. I've known there has been a lot of errors associated with this laptop when it comes to linux. I wanted to try Sabayon out because Gentoo has always been my favorite. I have downloaded and set it to boot from USB. Anyways, I can almost never get X to start up correctly. I boot up with "sabayon nomodeset" since a simple "sabayon" will return absolutely no input to my screen, it'll simply just black out. With nomodeset I can do some stuff on the shell. When I type in startx it returns "(EE) No devices detected" "No screens found" "Serverauth.9984 does not exist". So basically I tell myself great, another thing I can't use from fresh. But I didn't stop there. A while later I grabbed my external monitor and hooked it up. For the boot param, I just used "sabayon". After the system loaded up, both my laptop screen and external monitor worked. I chose to use MATE. After selecting from the list my external monitor blacked out and my laptop monitor stayed on perfectly. The best visuals I have ever seen on the laptop. So I am confused on how do I get my X server running properly.

Are there any messages in ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log that could shed light on the cause of the problem?

I also had this problem. Downgrading to the sabayon-weekly repo helped me get my computer working again.

I tried to upgrade again to see if I could find the problem, and I think I got something. Take a look at this:

If you upgrade the kernel, you should reinstall the Nvidia drivers modules, don't you? Well, Equo is not calling "Nvidia Drivers 390.77#4.18" or "Nvidia Drivers 390.77#4.14" in this list of upgrades. Could this cause the problem?

@Tedel: Not sure if we are going off topic here, but it seems there is a little bug in the new Entropy version 314.

When you use kernel-switcher switch it only seems to install the requested kernel, but fails to find the modules for the current running kernel.
So when you have 4.14 kernel running and wanted to install 4.18 kernel you would run:

Code: Select all

kernel-switcher switch sys-kernel/linux-sabayon-4.18.6
If this only install the 4.18 kernel and fails to also install the modules (e.g. nvidia-drivers) the system lacks working drivers for that kernel and fails.

A possible workaround would be:

Code: Select all

kernel-switcher switch sys-kernel/linux-sabayon-4.18.6 --from-running
We have the matter under investigation and will NOT bump weekly until this is resolved.

@Fitz : You might wanna split off this topic.

Joost, I ran an upgrade of everything and then downgraded the kernel with the sabayon-weekly repo. It works. It seems there is something wrong with either the newest kernel or with the way Nouveau is blacklisted by it. This other thread should be related.
