Distribution websites - pros and cons

Post by Ryuno-Ki » Wed Jun 20, 2018 20:35

Related to Feedback wanted: Relaunch coming soon.

Before I prepared the design, I looked at what other distributions did.
I want to explain what I like and what I think should change there to lead to the current implementation of our distribution's website.
The lists aren't exhausitive.

Images will be added later once I put them up somewhere …

Gentoo

Upside
  • Muted colour scheme (purple)
  • Most important actions available right there (Get Started, Downloads, Support, Donate,Get Involved)
Drawbacks
  • Bloated (Bootstrap requires divitis)
  • Too much text
  • No search
Debian

Upside
  • Search
  • Sitemap
  • Translations available
Drawbacks
  • Hard to orientate (where to start exploring?)
  • Text too wide (hard to read, because the eyes have to re-orient on line break)
  • Too much text
  • Links are too close to each other
Fedora

Upside
  • Clean layout (much whitespace, less text)
  • Decent use of colours for highlight
  • Focussing on one main action (download)
  • Translation available
Drawbacks
  • No search
  • No main navigation
Arch Linux

Upside
  • Developer oriented information put upfront
Drawbacks
  • Too much text
  • Emphasize of package updates (why? I want to download the distro, not random packages!)
  • Navigation on the right hand side violates user conventions (should be at top or on left hand for LTR languages)
Linux Mint

Upside
  • Muted colour scheme (green)
  • Narrowed main navigation, so easy to orient
  • Showing what I would get after installation (screenshot of desktop)
Drawbacks
  • Sponsor banners are interactive and draw the attention to it
  • Background image a bit too noisy
Ubuntu

Upside
  • Search available
  • Much whitespace
  • Decent amount of blog posts
Drawbacks
  • Two main navigations
  • Too many navigation items (where to start the journey?)
  • More self-promotional than interested in community or downloads?
My personal favourite so far is Fedora. Linux Mint does a good job here, too.

Now about you. What do you like or dislike?
