After Upgrades.... KDE not open, SDDM not open [Solved].

Post by albfneto » Wed May 16, 2018 20:55

I write this in my Sabayon "tests" installation, but it haves lightdm, not SDDM. Problem in my Main Sabayon:

Note: SDDM User is in the video group... Reinstall the sddm packages not solve the issue.

1. After all the upgrades of yesterday, May, 15, 2018, SDDM not more open! Only cursor and black screen...

2. when i try going to another tty, example with CTRL+ALT+F2,,,,, the screen show only this: "This is Sabayon Local". The "normal" message "Login:" appears only slownly, after 1 or 2 minutes....

3. After "Login:" I logged, as Root.... the command:

Code: Select all

# systemctl status sddm.service
Inform that sddm works, but "sddm-helper" "EXITED WITH code 6"

4. Sometimes, instead of 3. a message said "no default Login Manager", I solved this with these commands:

Code: Select all

# systemctl stop sddm.service
# systemctl disable sddm.service
# systemctl enable sddm.service -f
# systemctl reboot
after rebooting, the same as described in 3.

5. Testing.... I installed the "lxdm" package, the command "lxdm" works, lxdm starts but I have onlya a black screen, as in Item 1.

Resuming, sddm login manager not working. Not able to start X.

The overall issue is similar to this, but in Sabayon, not in Arch:

I upgraded today many packages (mostly from "kde" and "plasma") and have no issues... I am curious...
Try as root:
1. "rm /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service"
2. "systemctl enable sddm.service -f"
Uninstall "lxdm" of course...
Did you update "/etc/sddm.conf"? It is not required...

Tried, no change...

In the net, search, "sddm-helper exit code 6" is related to video

More tests: Since lxdm (after, i removed) gives only black screen, and sddm also...

I tried direct X acess The command "startx", opened the X
but give only the green TWM terminals.... In one of these terminals, i tried the "startkde" command....

final message is that "KDE not starts due to OpenGL failure"....

My video board is an ATI. It works with de driver xf86-video-ati (prior, installed and working)... i reistalled....

But this not change anything.

I'm writting this in my other Sabayon... The same comp, the same drivers, the same versions and it works....

Compare maybe your related "configs"... There must be some difference. Try "lsmod"... Search "ati" module in your system and symlinks to "libGl" and "opengl" and of course run "eselect opengl set ati".
Unfortunately I am using Nvidia GPU...

TRYING SOLUTIONS AND TESTS:

I removed sddm and their config files, then reinstall the sddm package.... No complete solution but....

when i try the command "startx" , as expected, X begins and the "TWM" terminals opened... In one of these terminals, i tried the command "startkde"....

PART ONLY OF THE KDE PLASMA OPENED . See the screenshot is a kind of "partial TWM and partial KDE"

https://ibb.co/bPO4iy

seems to me that the problem is related with the SDDM package.. Partial Solved? Reinstall all the Plasma packages may be a solution?

Example, my browser , in the Desktop, i opened by command, and is this, im' writing in my "problematic" Sabayon installation....

Have you compared "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" configs from both systems"?
You are in "lightdm", not in "sddm" and not in "kde" Desktop, seems to me...

in the "working" Sabayon (i'm now on here) it haves a general, no video driver device, generated by the system (is a newer installation)

Code: Select all

Section "Module"
    SubSection "extmod"
       Option "omit xfree86-dga"
    EndSubSection
    Load "i2c"
    Load "ddc"
    Load "vbe"
    Load "dri"
    Load "glx"
    Load "synaptics"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
     Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Generic Monitor"
    VertRefresh 43 - 60
    HorizSync 28 - 80
EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Main Layout"

EndSection

Section "Extensions"
   #Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection
In the "defective" Sabayon, since it is some years "rolled" Sabayon, it is configurated with this "Manually" made, /et/X11/xorg.conf (but until half week ago, it was worked good). some lines, they are to configure my 6 buttons mouse:

Code: Select all

Section "Module"
    SubSection "extmod"
       Option "omit xfree86-dga"
       Option "DRI 3"
    EndSubSection
    Load "i2c"
    Load "ddc"
    Load "vbe"
    Load "dri"
    Load "glx"
    Load "synaptics"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
     Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Generic Monitor"
    VertRefresh 43 - 60
    HorizSync 28 - 80
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "ATI Video"
    driver "radeon"
    Option "SwapbuffersWait" "false"
EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Main Layout"
    EndSection

Section "Extensions"
   #Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

# Mouse varios botoes, evdev
# Section "InputDevice"
        # Identifier "USB Optical Mouse"
        # Driver "evdev"
        # Option "Name" "USB Optical Mouse"
#EndSection

# Mouse varios botões
Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "USB Optical Mouse"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "Auto"
    Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "Buttons" "7"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
EndSection

The main differences are the Radeon Device Driver, present only in the "defective" Sabayon installation.

I the defective installation.. It uses SDDM and the package lightdm is not installed..

The screen is captured in a "semi-working" manner, I tried "bypass" the not working sddm, opening directly the X using ther command "startx".... this opened the TWM window manager (default in the X-Window).... are the green windows....

when i tried the "startkde" command, the monitor Gkrellm opened, and my "no perfect" KDE desktop opened...exemple, complete KDE not appears, bu when i try (in the TWM Xterm) the command "konsole", the Terminal Konsole opened, and Konsole is from KDE.

There are two drivers for ATI: "xf86 video ati" and open source "xf86 video amdgpu"... Maybe you are installed different drivers in your systems? Save your "xorg.conf" and copy the second (from working system)...

Check all configs... for example: /etc/conf.d/xdm
