VMware Player

Post by Trash Panda » Fri Mar 16, 2018 18:33

Hello

this is what i did
equo install virtualbox-modules-5.2.6#4.14.0-sabayon
equo install virtualbox-bin
equo install gcc
sh VMware-Player-14.1.1-7528167.x86_64.bundle

I am stuck where it ask for header.
so i did uname -r = 4.14.0-sabayon
then i try

equo search linux-headers-4.14 = no match
equo search linux-headers = sys-kernel/linux-headers-4.13
and on RIgo there is no matching kernel for the headers-4.13
i try goolge but no luck

what should i do ?

( sorry for my english its not my first language )

Hey there Trash Panda!

I believe the package you are looking for is sabayon-sources, specifically for the kernel you've got installed.

I have a other question. Why if i do the same commend as you the second result is not the same ? Stupot do you live in the future ?

you have different repository enabled

sabayon-weekly (you) vs sabayonlinux.org (stupot)

PS : do not mix (aka enabled) sabayon-weekly and sabayonlinux.org in the same time

PPS : please report the complete error or error log

linux-headers can be different than the installed kernel version

So how do i get the error log ?
The only message i got is when i click on VMware a windows that open:

Before you can run VMware, serveral modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel

Kernel Headers 4.14.0-sabayon

Kernel headers fgor the version 4.14.0-sabayon were not found. if you installed them in a non-default path you can specify the path below. Otherwise refer to your distribution documentation for installation instruction and click Refresh to search again in default locations.

simply VMware (and its built-in modules) must be recompiled with the running kernel version

I think it is looking for app-emulation/vmware-modules-??-?? or something like..

Where did you find "VMware" executable ?

install sabayon-sources

Code: Select all

# equo i sabayon-sources
start vmware player and choose

/usr/src/linux/sabayon-<running-kernel-versio>/include directory.

download systemd vwmare service at https://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-20855

extract and copy the contents to /usr/lib/systemd/system/

you can manage the vmware services for systemd

but...vmware player requires a valid kernel-module compiled for the running kernel, stored in /lib/modules/kernel-version

such app-emulation/vmware-modules

there are several overlays for vmware-{player,workstation}

I can suggest to you to file a bug for a package request

PS : can VirtualBox help you to realize your porpouses ?
