Probably Wicd is set for autostarting in your session, if you use Gnome, check that there
is no wicd or wicd-client to be autostarted (it was somewhere in the gnome control center,
unfortunately I have no Gnome...).

Ensure that wicd is not loaded using:
Code: Select all
rc-update

This will list all the available services and when they are started;
if you are after one in particular of them just use grep.
Code: Select all
rc-update | grep wicd

Did you try to run in a console:
Code: Select all
nm-applet

it should start the NetworkManager applet in Gnome.
you should set it to autostart.

there is a shared library missing, most likely there is a missing package due to the fact that nm-applet
was installed from entropy and NetworkManager from portage.

you could install nm-applet too using portage,
or find out which package is missing, probably it is:
Code: Select all
emerge -av '<net-misc/networkmanager-vpnc-0.7.0'

that should pick whichever version is below the one specified.

however my advice is to rebuild nm-applet using portage.
I think it should be more safe, try using the -av options, in order to see what it would do,
for example:
Code: Select all
emerge -av nm-applet

if it requires to update NetworkManager, then pick a version below.

Code: Select all
emerge -av nm-applet

calculating dependencies...done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satifsy "net-dns/avahi[autoipd]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
(depedency required by "net-misc/networkmanager-.0.7.1-r4" (ebuild)
(depedency required by "gnome-extra/nm-applet-0.7.1-r2" (ebuild)
(dependency required by "nm-applet" [arguement]

it is requesting an higher version of NetworkManager, probably you need to pick a lower
version of nm-applet.
Try the one matching your NetworkManager version:
Code: Select all
emerge -av '=nm-applet-0.6.6'
