KDE 4.2.4 Update kdeprefix Use Flag [Solved]

Postby tonyawards » Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:54

I just did an 'equo update && equo world' today and as it was installing kde 4.2.4 almost every kde package gave me the warning that I have the kdeprefix use flag enabled, and apparently that is not a good thing in order for upgrades to always go smoothly. I have not attempted to alter the default make.conf file since I installed sabayon (cautious newbie here), so I am wondering, do I want to disable that flag, or not, since it appears that SL's default is to have it enabled?

And if I do, is that done simply by placing a '-' in front of the flag? - that's what it looks like from what I found in the gentoo docs, but I want to be sure.

Thank you.

We do this on the 4 branch as it allowed users to choose to have/ not have KDE 4 when it was in its early stages (read 4.0), without KDEprefix there would have been issues. I wouldnt reccomend removing this flag at the moment.

The upcoming branch 5 will drop this flag as we think KDE4.x is stable/useable enough to run with properly and we will no longer be shipping KDE3.5

tonyawards, the packages in Entropy are all binaries (i.e. pre-compiled), so removing a USE flag (or adding a minus sign in front of it) wouldn't change the behaviour of the already-compiled packages. USE flags are intended for the source-based package manager Portage, and are used by Portage when merging (installing) i.e. compiling a package on your HDD in order to determine what features to build/compile in the package.

Thank you, Thev00d00 and Fitzcarraldo for the clarification. I'll take your advice and leave things the way they are for now and wait for the 5 branch to sort that out. I'm getting to know SL a little at a time (but as fast as possible), so this forum and all your guidance has been invaluable. (Congrats on your new forum at linuxquestions, BTW!)

I am currently trying to use entropy/equo exclusively, (just updating portage with the ' --sync' as needed to keep it current with entropy) as you have all said it's better/easier for newbies like me to use and stay out of trouble...

Thanks again, and thanks for the best distro I've yet seen – all your hard work is very much appreciated. When the hell do you guys sleep, anyway?

Stick with it, you'll be a pro in no time. It does take time to get it all down, especially if you want to understand what is under the hood, but it's all good education.
