SkySentials, an application to send SMS messages via Skype

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Fri Jun 05, 2009 21:16

Just discovered over on the Skype for Linux forum a nice Python script that allows you -- if you have a Skype account and have bought Skype Credit -- to send SMS messages via Skype from your PC. And, to my delight, the ebuild is in Portage. All I had to do to install it was to enter the following command as root user in a Terminal/Konsole window:

Code: Select all
emerge skype4py skysentials

and then fire up Skype for Linux 2.0.0.72 and enter the command:

Code: Select all
syksentials.py

in a Terminal/Konsole window under my usual username.

It worked 'out of the box'. Thanks to the author pkolmann and to whoever put together those two ebuilds in the Portage tree.

Note that PyGTK2 (dev-python/pygtk-2.*) has to be installed for this to work. My SL installation already has dev-python/pygtk-2.14.1 and dev-lang/python-2.5.4-r2 installed.

By the way, for anyone who thinks that Ubuntu is always easier to use than Gentoo/Sabayon Linux, the following thread explains how someone installed SkySentials under Ubuntu 9.04: http://forum.skype.com/index.php?s=&sho ... &p=1613181
