Does not seem to work: emerge syslinux

Post by brodders » Sun Mar 29, 2009 0:16

Hi,

Now following instructions re how to make a bootable USB (http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... ersistance), on a 3.5 system which Spritz says is up to date.

This happens:

Code: Select all

localhost brodders # equo install syslinux

localhost brodders # emerge syslinux
Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "sys-boot/syslinux".

localhost brodders # ls -l /usr/share/syslinux/mbr.bin
ls: cannot access /usr/share/syslinux/mbr.bin: No such file or directory
What is happening please? What needs be done to get this to work?

Thanks,

brodders

moved to correct forum

why are you installing it via entropy and than trying to install it via portage?

pick one package manager and stick with it.

Hi,

:) as said at top - following instructions in the HOW TO. Just doing what it says to do.

Anyhows, solved. I was expecting the HOW TO step:

Code: Select all

# dd if=/usr/share/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sdb
to work; it didn't. On my system what worked was the (?old) version:

Code: Select all

# dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sdb
which is shown as removed by an edit below the code, in the HOW TO.

Don't ask me why; I'm just a user.

should probably learn the package managers as they are vital to know before you get into trouble. Don't just blindly follow a how to as they tend to give directions for difference circumstances.
