Do you mean that you are unable to update even with Entropy?
To update packages with Entropy you can use Equo or Spritz,
'equo' is the command line tool:
as root
Code: Select all
equo update

be sure to update entropy first, if updates for it are available, with
Code: Select all
equo install entropy equo spritz

more info on the wiki: http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php?title=Entropy

You could try to update portage with entropy, it could
fix the problem.

Rather try equo.

Emerge error message:
rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1506) [generator=3.0.4]
>>> Exceeded PORTAGE_RSYNC_RETRIES: 3

This tells you that either the files on the source / server is funky or you do not have write permision on your hd for say admin tasks.
Try login as root user with your root password and try again.
If not working check /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab as likely there is a issue.

You can really only --sync 2 times a day but like this if in root user you might need to try and fix this and sync more times so here is alternative.
See if you have mirrorselect installed.
run
mirrorselect -D
This will get the fastest gentoo servers listed in /etc/make.conf and might be ones with less errors on them but anything is possible.
Then try again in root terminal.

Have you run "emerge" as root?

If he had tried to run it as a normal user he would have got the following message:

Code: Select all
[email protected] ~ $ emerge --sync
emerge: superuser access is required.

[email protected] ~ $
