fresh install update broke python (file too short)

Postby m0rgoth » Mon Jan 12, 2009 9:29

Hi,

i try to tinstall sabayon 4.1 x86_64 about 5 times and i always get same error at the end. i try to update world with 5 different methods but always get this error whend i try to start equo, emerge or another one package manager :
Code: Select all
python: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libpython2.5.so.1.0: file too short

i try to update using wiki method :
http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php?title=Entropy

with emerge also

and this method :

Code: Select all
On the login page there is a menu button at the bottom, press it. Console login. (this will take you out of the windowed environment)
now login as "root"
equo update (this syncs the database of applications on your computer with the sabayon server, you will be told there is a new entropy equo)
equo entropy (updates the installer applications)
equo world (this is the big one that will take some time, you'll have to accept licences at the start. But then the rest of the day is your own..)

in fact when the python update occur, there is an error who broke python, and after all packages managers who depend on python.

Did i do a mistake for update my system or is it a bug ?

I try to search on google or forums but nothing seems te refer to my bug ;(

a french new user of sabayon

cheers =)

Are you sure your iso was o.k.?
Did you md5sum the iso?

Did you try to reburn the DVD? (at a lower speed)

yes i md5 sum the iso before installing, and the emerge on fresh install work well, equo install Teamspeak works for exemple.

juste equo world broke entire updating/installing system when it try to install python update ;(

i there anything to do, like manual install of python to repair my install ?

Did I follow right process to world update my distrib ?

well when it comes down to the fundament of gentoo/sabayon scripts, python, one shoudl be very carefull.

Are you saying you used portage to update python?

yes the third time i retry on the 5 five total installs ;>

but the 2 last time i follow the entropy how to : http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php?title=Entropy

*equo update
*equo install entropy spritz
*equo --version (0.24.8 i think)
*equo world --ask

or i do :

equo update
equo install entropy
equo world

in console mode

-- I could retry to reinstall one more time to get exact error message of python install error if that help to debug

do NOT update python using emerge unless your a bit more experienced.

Allot of things are build against the python version you have installed. Its not possible to simply replace a python version and expect things to work.

i'm an old gentoo and portage user ;)

installed a stage 1 (when it was supported in the gentoo how to) during my studies but i break up for opensuse and sabayon make me return to my first loves ;

for the last updates i didn't use portage but only equo, as recommended on irc ;)

but with the how-to process my install break.

i don't think it was related to a corrupted install media since equo/spritz works well to install software after install, juste updating python broke packages managers ;'(

I think it will be a bit hard to repair that all i'm afraid.
Think the quick solution would be reinstalling.

In general we advice to not mix portage and entropy.

i'm ready to reinstall no prob =) i love to discover a new distro and reinstall many times to get things working well s not a prob =)

the only thing bores me a little is i m not sure about the first update world process.

is the :

Code: Select all
*equo update
*equo install entropy spritz
*equo world --ask

process is the right thing to do on a fresh update ?

cause if that process is the good one i've already try it, and it break up to.

i'm ok to download again an iso, re md5'sum it to reinstall and avoid media problem but i'm not really sure problem come from media ;x

in you're advice : if you where in my case what is gonna be the right thing to do ?

NB : i prefer repeating i'm french and my english is poor so excuse me one more time if my post wasn't enought clear and thank you again for your time =)

the procedure you describe above is correct.

First synchronize with the online database
Code: Select all
equo update

Most likely there is a new entropy version
Code: Select all
equo install entropy

Then do the world
Code: Select all
equo world --ask

In a certain way, you CAN use portage. e.g. attach a kde testing overlay and merge kde 4.2. Thats pretty safe todo, but in other cases like libraries or python, the binaries in the binary tree are compiled with and against them in that tree. If you break that tree things will go bad.
