What do you think about the latest release 4.0?

Postby carpenterguy » Wed Dec 31, 2008 21:52

I Have a msi board with the nvidia chipset that has given me problems in the past. 6 months ago, all The modules needed were not available.
I tried the board again yesterday expecting to reload and re-install with 4.0.
When I rebooted with my 3.5 install.... Everything works fine.

What do you think about 4.0 so far?
Can I upgrade from 3.5 to 4.0?

You can upgrade, but I would suggest doing a fresh install of 4.0 particularly if you are using 32 bit (x86).

Sorry Wolfden, not sure what you mean by sl4-rt and google did not help, will assume you are talking about the new distro.
I am / was running 3.5 I was hoping on a little feedback about 4.0 I decided I have been running sabayon for 2 years and will update sooner or later. Now is a good time for me.
I did find a thread that suggest you do not upgrade as it can take 24 hours.
I have a little free time so I am upgrading to see how it goes. I was prepared to wipe and re-install, but hey, it is a quad with 4 gigs, cant take that long. 3 hours and counting.

Upgrade from 3.5.1 went fine, I found just few minors easily solvable!
It took about 12 hours on a AMD Athlon 64 X2 @ 2,4GHz for updating 1123 packages.
Look is very nice, I think this agrees all Sabayoneros (dark loving and colorful loving ones)!

Many thank to Fabio and Sabayon Dev Team.

First I would like to thank Joost for the fine job on the how to.
I followed it and it ran for 6 hours before I went to bed. I woke up and their was 1281 updates and I saw no errors. I rebooted and then read the rest of Joost how to. Re-install grub. I did chroot into it and I had issues installing grub. I ended up re-installing and am very happy with 4.0.
I suggest others read the how to and re-install grub before rebooting.
Joost is your friend and their is a reason why he wrote it.

So far I have not found anything that does not work. My needs are small but have been using sabayon for almost 2 years. It has never failed me and it looks like 4.0 will not either.

Total nob when it comes to using Linux distros, always used windows.

Added extra hard drive to my system, and had a surf round to decide which distro to try.
Settled on this release, went slowly through the how to install the system and only had a
bit of a problem with the partioning, the rest of the install worked with no problems.

I have now a dual boot system that works as it should (even the grahics and sound worked
out the box) 8)

Now I just have to get to grips with the system and learn how to use it to its full potential.

The 4r1 version is very useful. If you want know like work, you have play the live DVD and check how work the sound, the compiz, etc.If you have a good graphic card like nvidia, and if you see that work fine in live DVD with compiz, i recommend that install with option 3D (Compiz load when gnome init), but in your case, i believe that could upgrade.
