Thunderbird hits windows again.

Postby WarraWarra » Wed Dec 03, 2008 13:37

Latest joke of the Microshaft / Windows / Mozilla day:
LOL the latest Joke in windows world is the wonderfull message from Thunderbird saying:

Thunderbird is already running to open another window first close exsisting running thunderbird.

The biggest problem is that nowhere is there any evidence of thunderbird running, even after clean install of xp most users found that this happens for no good reason.
Wonder when thunderbird will have this happen to Linux ?

Luckilly we are not limited to thunderbird only and we have a choice in linux as alternatives.

Yeah linux rocks and windows still has thunderbird running although it is defective and not working LMAO.

Is this the way the mozilla cookie is crumbeling first firefox now thunderbird what next ?
So I wonder is KDE linked to Mozilla or are they just sharing defective products and forcing me to enjoy Gnome and working alternatives ?

Yea I dunno what they are doing over there - switched to Opera over here. FF just seems to be creeping along to bloatness and unreliable. I use to use Thunderbird, but have just switched completely to web based mail. I remember back in the day when FF entered the world and it was nice.

Thought I'd replied to this thread before but apparently not.

What web based email do you like, and are there any good alternatives to FF and opera?

I've been using yahoo email the last 6 months, as haven't had TB for getting into my verizon account.
Is it possible to get into the verizon account from yahoo or some other web based account?

Or is it better to load up TB on sabayon.

^Thunderbird works fine for me under SL (and under Windows XP Professional too, for that matter). It has a WebMail extension that can access Yahoo WebMail accounts (and accounts from various other WebMail providers: http://webmail.mozdev.org/ ). You can find out more in mozillaZine: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_webmail ... ail_client (notice the link on that page to a dedicated thread in the mozillaZine forum on the WebMail extension). From time to time the WebMail providers change their software so the extensions have to be changed to keep pace, but the aforementioned mozillaZine thread and a Google group http://groups.google.com/group/thunderb ... ion/topics keep people up to date on the latest developments).

See the instructions in the SL Wiki article http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... al_boot_PC (scroll down to the relevant section in the article) for how to set up Thunderbird with WebMail (the instructions are for using it with Hotmail, but should be similar to what you'll need to do for other WebMail providers).

Thanks for the excellent info and links.

Output from the terminal is as follows.

[email protected] ~ $ sudo emerge mozilla-thunderbird
Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "mozilla-thunderbird".

Do I need to get an ebuild for TB?

^It's in the Entropy package database ( http://www.sabayonlinux.org/packages ) too, so you could:

Code: Select all
$ su
Password:
# equo install mozilla-thunderbird

or, if you prefer to use Portage ( http://www.gentoo-portage.com/AdvSearch ), you could:

Code: Select all
$ su
Password:
# emerge --sync
# layman -S
# emerge mozilla-thunderbird

Fitzcarraldo, thank you very much.

TB downloaded fine this morning, I got it set up, downloaded the email this afternoon and all is well with the program.

Thanks again. :)

LOL I used to hate gnome with a passion, since 3.5.1 I just love gnome except I change start button to bottom similar to kde and windows and bottom bar to top.
KDE bloatware will never see me again unless they get their act together even though it has a few nicer things that I have not seen in gnome yet but so what LOL.

Same with firefox / thunderbird / amd /ati / apple. Once they get real and grow up I will be back and praying for this day to come.
