Opera freezes on some sites [Solved]

Postby LordBernhard » Sat Sep 27, 2008 21:44

Hey!

I'm having a REALLY grave problem (imo).. Opera lags on some sites while loading (the whole window freezes and doesn't react anymore for like 20 seconds) .. I've tried using firefox (those sites work there) but it's interface is slow in general (compared to opera .. of course this is just subjectiv) .. on other distributions I have no slowdowns on these sites using Opera.

One of those sites which make opera freeze (everytime I open it) is:
http://www.phoronix.com

I'm using Sabayon Linux 3.5, x86, Opera 9.52 Build 2091, Flash player 9.0.124.0 (from entropy)

Hope someone is able to help me.. it's really annoying when you search for something in google and enter such a site which freezes your browser :-(

Best regards

Bernhard

[Edit]: Just started opera from the command line .. that's the output:

Code: Select all
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libjvm.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libawt.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
opera: X Shared memory extension is not available. ZPixmap not supported
QMultiInputContext::changeInputMethod(): index=0, slave=xim
opera: Plug-in 8493 is not responding. It will be closed.
opera: Define environment variable OPERA_KEEP_BLOCKED_PLUGIN to keep blocked plug-ins.

so.. a plugin seems to block.. any ideas?

output of about:plugins

Your browser is complaining about Java. jvm is Java Virtual Machine and awt is found out to be via google: "libawt.so is a shared lib referenced from the JavaSoft AWT classes
(Toolkit -> MToolkit.java)."

Looking at the page source the only flash i saw was this: http://www.phoronix.net/images/advertis ... 728x90.swf
If you can view that directly in your browser that's one thing knocked off, leaving the only other thing: the whole page is javascript and your browser apparently can't find java.

How to fix that, you'll have to ask someone else, but I took a look and this is what I've found, so I'm just passing the info. :D

You realise javascript is not anything todo with java vm?

Are you on 32 or 64 bit?

The site http://www.phoronix.com/ also freezes 64 bit opera here but disabling plugins allows it to load OK. I suppose a way to find out would be to disable each plugin in turn.

I decided to remove my 64 bit Opera and installed the 32 bit direct from source. Managed to get java going but the freezing was still there for some sites. I found that by changing all the plugin paths to this one /usr/lib32/nsbrowser/plugins seems to have done the trick.

OMG! You're my hero :D It worked.. For those having the same problem and searching for a solution.. here is it:

In opera:
tools
-- preferences
-- advanced
-- content -- plug-in options.. -- change path ..
uncheck all paths except /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins

seems like the multiple entries of plugins have confused opera (I had multiple shockwave flash players in the "detected plugins"- list..

Thanks so much again :-) I finally can go back to opera and use it's gorgeous session management.. it's the only thing I really miss when using konqueror ^^
