How to convert Office 2007 files to OpenOffice & vice versa

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Wed Mar 19, 2008 14:59

For those of you receiving Microsoft Office 2007 files (.docx, .xlsx etc.) who want to convert them to OpenOffice's format (.odt, .ods etc.), or those of you wanting to convert OpenOffice files to Office 2007 format, a tool by Novell is available (which I understand will be integrated into OpenOffice in due course). This is to explain how I installed the tool and how I use it.

A. INSTALLATION

1. Open a Terminal window and check if the package cpio is installed (it should be already):

emerge -s cpio

If it isn't, install it as root:

emerge -1v cpio

2. Open a Terminal window and install the package rpm as root:

emerge -1v rpm

3. Download to your Desktop the file odf-converter-1.1-7.i586.rpm if you are using SL x86, or odf-converter-1.1-7.x86_64.rpm if you are using SL x86_64. You can find the files here:
http://download.go-oo.org/red-carpet/oo ... 7.i586.rpm
http://download.go-oo.org/red-carpet/oo ... x86_64.rpm

4. Open a Terminal window as root and cd to your normal user's Desktop directory. E.g.:

cd /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop

5. Unpack the .rpm file by typing the following command:

rpm2cpio odf-converter*rpm | cpio -ivd

There should be three new icons on your Desktop:

a) odf-converter-1.1-7.i586.rpm (or odf-converter-1.1-7.x86_64.rpm if you downloaded the 64-bit version)
b) The directory opt
c) The directory usr

6. Copy the binary to the /usr/bin/ directory. E.g.:

cp /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/usr/lib/ooo-2.0/program/OdfConverter /usr/bin

or, if you downloaded the 64-bit version:

cp /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/usr/lib64/ooo-2.0/program/OdfConverter /usr/bin

7. You can now delete the directories opt and usr on your Desktop, as well as the .rpm file you downloaded. E.g.:

rm -r /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/opt
rm -r /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/usr
rm -r /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/odf-converter*.rpm

B. USAGE

a) To convert a .docx file (Word 2007) to a .odt (OpenDocument Format) file, type the command in a Terminal window (you don't need to be root). For example:

OdfConverter /i /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/my_filename.docx

The .odt file will be created in the same directory as the .docx. Then open the ODF file in OpenOffice.org. If you want, you can resave it in the older Microsoft .doc format.

b) The procedure is the same to convert a .xlsx (Excel 2007) to a .ods file:

OdfConverter /i /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/my_filename.xlsx

c) OdfConverter can convert from OpenOffice to Microsoft Office 2007 format too. For example:

OdfConverter /ods2xlsx /i /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/my_spreadsheet.ods

d) OdfConverter can do a lot more. For help on the arguments that OdfConverter accepts, run OdfConverter without arguments.

I've only had experience of one .docx file (someone sent it to me as they didn't know how to open it) and I found that Open Office opened it without any prior conversion.

By any chance are you using the Novell or Ubuntu editions of OpenOffice, dunsurfin? Apparently those versions have an integrated OdfConverter:

When it is released, OpenOffice 3 will have OdfConverter built-in, so conversion of Office 2007 files by OpenOffice will be automatic whatever the platform/edition.

Just the standard Gentoo 2.3.0.5 version on my machine, Fitzcaraldo. When I received the file, Sabayon saw it as a compressed file of some sort and I had to use "open with" to get it to open. However there is no facility to save as a docx and it was a very simple letter - perhaps a more complicated document would have caused problems.
