slow bittorrent downloads

I have a d-link di-604 router I use the Deluge client I run Sabayon 3.5. I opened ports 6881-6999 in my router but still have slow downloads. I had fast downloads before I put my router on. I followed the steps to open ports right from the d-link web site. Has anyone suffered a similar issue?

Try configuring different port numbers. Set Deluge to use something like ports 54321-54320 and set those on your router as well. Some ISP's throttle default ports on torrent programs to discourage piracy and stuff like that, hence those ports may be slow for you likely for that reason.

I've tried different ports I even tried opening all the ports. but nothing. I have iptables installed on my system but to my knowledge the firewall is not active. And even if it was I had lightning fast downloads before I put the router on. Does anybody have any suggestions? This may be a stupid question but is there a way I can have 2 computers online without a router?

I use a router and have no issues at all, check the router mtu settings? Something isn't set right in your router.

yes you can run two computers on internet without router, just need to setup the networking properly. A router is a much easier to deal with.

I have a router and I have no problems as well... so as wolfie said,check the mtu size and check on the firewall settings those 2 will solve your router related issues. I suggest you try with 2 different torrent clients and see if its not a client related issues.. I use either ktorrent directly from kde or utorrent via wine and of course make sure there are enough seeders and leechers on those torrents to have people with available bandwidth to download from !

Deluge clients recently have been suffering severe download issues for me. I loaded Ktorrent and it was sucking down torrents like no tomorrow. Seems like the most recent (-rc5) deluge release has helped somewhat, but I seldom get torrents to download faster than 20KBps now with deluge, whereas same torrent different client will come down at 125KBps.

I also had something similar with deluge, very slow speed (20 kbps). I thinkered with the settings then and now I get speeds from 200kbps and up for same torrents

I don't remember exactly what I changed, but I think it was something with encryption. If you want I will lookup my deluge settings tonight (I'm not at my sabayon box right now...)

My mtu setting is at 1492 but that means nothing to me. What should it be at? By the way thanx for all the help so far, Ktorrent did prove to be faster!

1492 is a good default value for MTU.

You could do some tweaking there, but it sounds like your problem was with deluge.
