Reset X conf

Post by trackrat » Fri Jul 25, 2008 0:33

I am new to Linux, and my native monitor resolution is 1280x1024, the default installation was 1024x768.
I opened up the Nvidia X server settings then I clicked on the resolution button and set it to 1280x1024, clicked apply and OK then I clicked to save to X conf file and then clcked save and a box came up saying unable to create new x config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'.
This means that every time I log in I have to reset the screen resolution.
I am using Gnome desktop.

you shouldn't be using that anyway as it will kill 3D desktop

the wiki has a howto for resolution - use the search

this is because your user account only has read access to the /etc/X11/ directory and xorg.conf file.

if you looking for a once off configuration change run nvidia-settings as root make the changes and restart x.
