Postby clockwork » Mon Jun 16, 2008 19:38

what im really looking for is a linux alternative to mediamonkey, thats the only thing i really miss from windows
ive head many things about amarok and im playing with it now, but i dont like the playlist type veiw that it gives me.
i prefer the library veiw of files so i can browse through my music as i want.
maby theres something inside amarok that im not seeing, or just a differnt program i havent heard of yet

Linux Format magazine reviewed some players in their September 2007 issue (LXF96) and gave the following ranking:

Amarok 10/10
Rhythmbox 8/10
Juk 7/10
Banshee 6/10
BMPx 5/10
XMMS 2/10

Amarok handles my 75GB music collection very nicely, can't wait for Amarok 2 to come out; then it should cope with video too 8)

I've heard some good things about songbird, although I don't know if it's ready to be used as a full time app, as it's still very new (possibly still alpha/beta).

Amarok is by far the best music player EVER, in ANY OS!

Can even use SQL backend for music collection (as opposed to the SQLite backend it normally uses, which works fine for even up to a terabyte of music). So unless you are BMG or Sony and have a music library in the exobyte range, Amarok should be ok.

amarok is quite good, i can give you that, but i am a very picky person
i tried songbird and it was fairly nice, but it only loaded 2200 songs into the library??
might be just a problem within my system, might give it a reinstall but havent tried yet

What did you find lacking in Amarok? How did it fail to meet your needs? Maybe you could elaborate and we may be able to point you to ways to fix what ails you. Also, it may help Amarok devs to make their product even better.

I have never been able to get SQL to work in Amarok :? With about 1/3 of my CD's ripped onto HDD, I could certainly use SQL not SQLite. Would there be a USE flag to get Amarok compiled with SQL enabled?

Thanks!
