network connection problems [Solved]

Postby bookie56 » Thu Apr 24, 2008 18:25

Hi to everyone here at Sabayon. I am new in town and am having problems setting up my network.

I have tried setting the network via net-setup, but on reboot my dns info seems to disappear?

I have gone into resolv.conf and set my dns as follows.

nameserver 195.54.122.200
nameserver 195.54.122.204

I always use this info on all of my distros without problem, but on Sabayon it is over written at boot and when I check resolv.conf there is nothing there?!!

When I have added the info to resolv.conf I can get out on the NET straight away, but, as I pointed out, the info is erased on reboot?

Has anyone got any ideas on this one? :)

there have been a couple people with this problem - our advice is always, always use network manager for all your networking needs - our bootscripts assume you use it, so they tends to screw up resolv.conf and even sometimes extra modules. As a moderately ugly hack, you can create a proper resolv.conf, name it something like /etc/myresolv and add the line "cp /etc/myresolv /etc/resolv.conf" to etc/conf.d/local.start so that you can re-overwrite the overwritten file. Alternatively you can disable the networkmanager startup in /etc/init.d and /etc/conf.d, but I'm not sure how much work that will entail, and this will work just as effectively.

Hi xlnagla, I appreciate what you are saying. I wouldn't have gone the resolv.conf route if I could get my dns info to save? I will look at your idea - but I am still a little puzzled as to why the network gui doesn't save my dns info?

Thanks for stopping by :D

you can implement my suggestion and that will work fine - the net-setup gui does implement your suggestion, networkmanager then promptly overwrites it upon boot. That's the problem - the two don't play together nicely. This hack is designed to let them play together without disabling features of one or the other.

Hi xlnagla, I managed to get some time this evening!! I created my own resolv as you directed and that solved my problem.

Now I only need to get to grips with "emerge" etc.

Thanks again for your help
