Wolfenstein Enemy territory AMD64 open gl error?

Postby joebogarde » Sun Mar 23, 2008 20:20

I have used enemy territory on every platform. I have used gentoo (from scratch) Slackware, redhat etc. I have glxgears working. Glxinfo says direct rendering on.

Nexuiz works.

Wolfenstein enemy territory and Sauerbraten both give me open gl errors. Weird since I have 3d rendering working.

The onrush of support was overwhelming. I reinstalled on that basis, and copied the xorg.conf from the livedvd. Now compiz effects are working. Opengl is working still. Continue to get the error message. Creating symlinks didn't work. Installing 32 bit emulation didn't help.

It's easter, so no surprise, I'm glad I got one response. I believe this is the reason I had vista installed for the past year practically. Nobody seems to know how to help. I don't really want to downgrade to 32 bit distro of Sabayon. Why should I not enjoy my amd64 processor?. The same story with even xp pro 64 bit version. Nothing seems to work in the normal way. Emulation and wine-doors won't help me use the windows version. I don't want to pay for cedega, I know et works natively in linux, why should I be forced to use 32 bit linux, or a lousy, bloated product from M$ Windows, insecurity 2008?

I really want to go back to enjoying enemy territory as I haven't been able to in a long time. On M$ Windows I end up being pm-ed all day long for tech support requests. I really want to avoid that, being on a linux platform means I can manage help requests when I feel like it.

Help!

the information in your threads don't give enough information for anyone to know anything.

I run 64 bit and have no problems with ET

You don't gain much running 64 bit to begin with. My main running install is 32 bit and people new to linux should run 32 bit.

Adding the use flags isn't enough, if you add flags than you need to recompile the packages that use those flags to get em to work.

To find the version of SabayonLinux your running --- cat /etc/sabayon-release
mini or DVD?

telling us your kernel version doesn't tell us much at all besides your kernel is out dated so I would than assume your drivers are outdated too or even the wrong video drivers, but without knowing what video card - who knows.......

Some time on the forum searching would also point u to other threads with the known issue

Than you sit there and complain about support? Wow...........

Good Luck with that.

When it comes to any kind of free support, do not expect instantaneous gratification. Especially on the forums. We are volunteers, with expertise in different areas. Even in IRC, it may be some time before a person with the solution to your particular problem logs in and is ready to help you.

The problem that you are encountering is one of many in any 64 Bit OS. The applications themselves need to be written and compiled to take full advantage of your CPU. If you have less than 3 Gigs of memory, do not render video, and do not need the additional memory address length available in a 64 Bit OS, then it's not for you. Especially since very few apps are released for it, for whatever OS you choose. Especially when it comes to gaming, the best path to follow is to install an x86 32-Bit Sabayon release.

Hey I'm just frustrated. I have been through many forums. I want to take advantage of 64 bit cpu. I think emulation should be a possibility. I'm bent on making this configuration work. I think it's a cop out to tell me to try 32 bit os instead. Many people have had success. This software runs natively on linux. My other opengl apps work.

I'm not complaining about support, just frustrated that the responses have not been very helpful, and sort of condescending. Pardon me for calling it as I see it.

As for support, I volunteer myself when I can, in areas that are relevant to my level of experience, (about 8-9 years in linux). I'm not accustomed to not being able to complete a task. Lately mail server on BSD, and now opengl in sabayon in an outdated version of the OS.

Just because a guy gets frustrated and then remarks about his frustration, doesn't make him a jerk. I'm just tired of this after a day of working on it. You try spending a day doing one single task fruitlessly without complaint.

we do every day with people who get upset with us, but still we return.

You still haven't post the information needed or told us what you did. I've told you the information needed and I've told you I have no problems running it on my 64 bit system so it's apparent you are not doing something right and without no information you can't get no response.

There is an opengl known issue with a previous release, but has been posted over and over how to fix. You still haven't even told us which one you are running. You would rather type up a post of frustration than post the requested information.

Running 32 bit isn't a cop out it's a fact. Do some research on it and see for yourself. I can do the same in a 64 bit system as my 32 bit system. The issue you are having doesn't even have anything to do with that fact.

I suggest before venting any more at the help:

Ya, I was still wondering how to tell which version I'm running. I didn't label it. It's a live dvd from last August. Professional 1.1? Perhaps? I'm not expecting instant anything with linux. I just figured there would be relevant posts about the subject by now. I wouldn't need to post. 99% of the time I don't need to post. Then 99% of that 1% of the time I still find the answer by myself anyway.

That said, please let me know how to check that info.

P.S. Sorry for being a douche.

I know enough to know when I'm wrong for being a jerk.
