HOWTO Saitek a250 Wireless Speakers with Amarok

Postby fbaggins » Sat Mar 08, 2008 14:18

First ensure that the usb-snd modules are loaded in the kernel.
Code: Select all
su
password
lsmod

You should see something like this
snd_usb_audio 91776 1
snd_usb_lib 18688 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_rawmidi 27648 1 snd_usb_lib
snd_hwdep 11656 1 snd_usb_audio
Next start amarok and go to settings/configure amarok/engine.
change the Output plugin to OSS.
The OSS Device Configuration should be /dev/dsp.
Play some music and go to
~/.kde3.5/share/apps/amarok
and open the xine-config file in your favorite editor
Uncomment the line
#audio.device.oss_device_number:-1
and change it to
audio.device.oss_device_number:1
If you have more than one usb sound device you may have to use 2, or 3 or 4. Keep this file open until you have found the number that works.
Don't forget to save the file after each change.
My file looks like this

#audio.a52.surround_downmix:0

# A/52 volume
# [0..200], default: 100
#audio.a52.level:100

# OSS audio device name
# { auto /dev/dsp /dev/sound/dsp }, default: 0
audio.device.oss_device_name:/dev/dsp

# OSS audio device number, -1 for none
# numeric, default: -1
audio.device.oss_device_number:2

audio.device.alsa_front_device:default

audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Stereo 2.1

# MPEG-4 postprocessing quality
# [0..6], default: 3
#video.processing.ffmpeg_pp_quality:3

Make sure the speakers are on and communicating with the dongle and the volume is high. When you hit save with the right number you will hear the sound from the speakers.

being a HOWTO, this is an excellent candidate to be made into a wiki page, if you are so inclined.

I don't know how to wiki as it said I was not in the right group. If someone wants to copy it over to wiki then go ahead.
BTW this method dosn't survive a reboot, I need to do a bit more research. It would be far easier if amarok would display /dev/dspx where x is the numbers of the usb sound devices.

You can make a script out of that neat little guide and then put it in /etc/conf.d/local.start to run it at boot (just as a trick to make the changes permanent with your method).

OK I'll try that, but one of the problems I can foresee is that it can get mapped to a different /dev/dspx.

you can use variables and a combination of sed and grep to get the right one every time, I'll go into more detail once I get off the plane ;)
