Help the Noob

Postby RLVampire » Thu Feb 14, 2008 1:54

I have been searching for the past five days for a decent guide on how to install things that are not in portage or ent ..... Been searching for guides with rpm,sh, and the tar.gz or tar.bz2 to help me install things but none of them seem ot help .... anyone have links to topics on the forum with specific " gentoo sabayon " ways to install tarballs and other gnu packages ?

Also I have installed all the video things I could find and none of the " FLV " file will play on here ..... I cant watch youtube, cnet, or any other place with similar videos ...

A couple of points.

First off, firefox should automatically install flash player for you, but if it doesn't, there's a handy install right off of adobe/macromedia's website, and the install process is thankfully distro-independent, so see if that works for you.

As a second point, what packages do you want exactly? It's really rare for something important not to be in portage or in a repository - try syncing and trying again. If you really want something that's not in the portage tree and it's not java-based, then download a source tarball (or any other compression type), unpack it to some directory (tar -xvf works for tarballs), then run
./configure
make
make install

and you'll have the package installed.

Hope that helps,

I have done the tar xvf " insert " thing and tried to do the steps " made " to install frostwire for example but it doesnt seem to work. Also, I want to play games and have looked at wine, cedega, and crossover guides to get wc3 installed on the computer but to no avail ...... I have done search and looked at the fourm and gentoo website and really looked at a few guides, .... I guess I need a picture guide or something because I am total noob to installing things on Gentoo Sabayon .... " however I have over 24 hours worth of experience with the terminal because of trying to manually, using text installation path install the orginal Gentoo LiveDvd " so im totally clueless ....

What do you mean by "doesn't work"? Also, to get wine up be sure to run winecfg first.

i am trying to install frostwire too, and it says it is installed in portato, also java shows up as installed. when i try to run it i get:

Java exec found in PATH. Verifying...
OOPS, you don't seem to have a valid JRE. FrostWire works best with Sun JRE available at http://www.java.com [java = changelog]
You need to upgrade to JRE 1.5.x or newer from http://www.java.com

i copied fastjar and ran the check again, this time it had me install some other java config file, tried to emerge but would not work, followed the link to download from java and follwed the instuctions in terminal, installed the java config OK, checking again...

That is so odd, anything with java like a video cannot be seen in the firefox browser, however if I download it, will run perfectly .....
