Installing newest Nvidia 8800 drivers..

Postby Vis » Wed Jan 16, 2008 23:33

I'm attempting to install the newest drivers for my 8800 card in Sabayon x86-64. Now,I know I can't being running an x-server, so I log in with the console. When I run the nvidia installer though, I'm missing the kernel sources. My question is, what do I need to emerge so I can run the nvidia installer? I'm sure it's kernel sources, but which ones?

One other thing that someone might be able to help me with: 3d Compiz performance is 100% great when signed in as admin, but as a users it's laggy. Thoughts?

try this...

Code: Select all
emerge -av =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-169.04-r10

it is not the newest but the newest one has some issues with the new nvidia-cards and fan speed.

so be careful which one you wnat to use.

EDIT:
use the forum search before emerging kernel sources... viewtopic.php?f=75&t=12033&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=sources

and there is more about it.

WINDOWS: Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, trash it, melt - upgrade it, charge it, pawn it, zoom it, press it, snap it, write it, get it, paste it, save it, load it, check it, plug it, play it, burn it, rip it, drag and drop it - stop. format it.

Awesome, thanks. Not a problem with the new drivers because I usually run the fan at 100% anyway (it's overclocked on the bios level).

i edited my post referring to the kernel sources.

you always go full speed? i use a 8800gts and even with this...

amd 64 x2 4600(zalman 7700cu)@2600, asrock 939nf4g-sata2, nvidia 8800 gts 640 [email protected]/1031, 2x1024 corsair xms twinx [email protected], be quiete blackline p5 420 watt

sabayon linux 3.5 loop1 beta/ windows xp prof...

and crysis on "high" with 1280x1024 i run my fan with 60% and the temperature is about 50 - 60 C.

so why go faster and louder? i am waiting for a new driver.

Hm, my clocks are close to yours. I suppose I could turn it down, it just never bothers me much.
