I have the exact same problem, not even in VLC that usually plays anything. I always get sound but no picture. I have all codecs installed.

When running vlc from konsole, this is what I get

Code: Select all

$ vlc /files/Downloads/Brazil_Xvid_AC3_Beefstew.CD1.avi
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
[00000291] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
[00000327] a52 decoder: A/52 channels:2 samplerate:48000 bitrate:192000
No accelerated IMDCT transform found

Video is playing in small window only, when I turn on full screen mode then screen is black and video is in the same small size.
Do you know how to do full screen mode? My screen resolution is 1280 x 800 computer HP 510 laptop. video card is Intel 915GM.

Need your help!
You need to edit the mplayer.conf file located at /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
What I did was as followed:
uncommented (deleted the # at the beginning of each line) the following lines:

Code: Select all

vo=xv
zoom=yes
I'm pretty sure the zoom=yes is the specific reason your video won't expand.

^Do you have the following local USE flags for mplayerplug-in in /etc/portage/package.use?

Code: Select all

net-www/mplayerplug-in gtk quicktime divx gmedia realmedia wmp win32codecs nsplugin firefox xvid
Also, do you have the global USE flag "xvid" in the list of USE flags in /etc/make.conf? If not, add them and emerge mplayerplug-in and vlc. (The local USE flags for mplayerplug-in will have no effect on vlc, but it's worth rebuilding it with all the flags anyway for other uses). If compiling vlc fails, you need to emerge wxGTK if I remember correctly (search the forum).

Did you edit /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf like I suggested a few posts ago?

Your konsole log says thath you have problem with decoding sound. I wager it is something with AC3, try to search some info about it around the net or search for AC3 filter or codecs if they are existing for Linux (I don't know if AC3 are part of codecs32 or not).

Do this to get your codecs:
emerge ffmpeg xine-lib vlc
then play with vlc
yeah, also make sure your sound card is working.
do something like:
alsaconf
kmix

I used to have this problem back on sabayon 3.3 because of the old video card I had (nvidia tnt) .. so I solved it by reinstalling the latest nvidia drivers for my card from the nvidia site then I'd download mplayer with the codecs, copy the codecs in teh designated folder and a

Code: Select all

./configure && make && make install
in the mplayer source directory would solve it !
