hi Wolfden,
Having similar issues Ihave the following system
amd 64 (K8-Deluxe motherboard)
Realtek AC97 soundcard
nvidia fx 5700 graphics
1gb ram
3 hdd (2 sata (120 gb) 1 ide (320gb))
2 monitors 1 crt Mit Diamond View 19" Dell 17" lCD
2 Usb Drives (1 Lacie 1Tb 1 Samsung 320gb)

Everything is working fine except....
No sound tells me "the familiar null sound etc."
and the display I can only landscape across both monitors rather than have them display independantly..just annoying rather than a problem.
can't live without sound though.

Thanks in anticipation Nigel

You may also try removing all but barebones hardware (ie use only mouse, keyboard, monitor, speaker/headset) as occasionally that error can be caused by the soundsystem erroneously picking up some device you have connected as the sound card (in my case, it picked up the tv tuner as the sound card).

Hogwartsnigel, the command is "alsaconf" not alsaconfig  Here's some hints for sound troubles:
    1) Check Kmix. It can be silenced or the volume can be reduced.
    2) Check alsamixer.
    3) Check settings in Sound System (start menu---> Settings---> Sound and Media (or something like that)---> Sound system). Make sure that there is ALSA as your sound card.
    4) Run "alsaconf" and after that run "update-modules". If there are problems with modules this command should easily fix it (It helped me with my sound problem described in Gamers Shed)
    5) Try re-emerging/emerging alsa libs. Newest versions can be useful ;)
