ATI Radeon 9200, fglrx 8.42

Postby skzo » Wed Oct 24, 2007 11:44

[I duplicated my post from 3d Desktops, thread to here, because i think its more apropriated]

hello, I just made a fresh install of sabayon, i have a radeon 9200, and on the live cd, aiglx and XGL were both working.

After i installed with gnome desktop, the first thing i noticed is that /usr/sbin/accel-manager, had a typo, it was using kdesu, instead of gksudo, since i installed the gnome desktop. i also don't have direct rendering, neither aiglx/XGL of course.

i've also tried to install the new ATI driver that came out today (8.42), but i have a "no display found" error starting X, using that new fglrx driver.

so these are my outputs:

HI.

ATI Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver 8.28.8 is the last version who support ATI Radeon 9200 card. That is why it doesn't work with the new one.

Try rebooting with the live CD and look at your xorg.conf file. Also lsmod can help.

ati 92xx is perfectly supported under opensource drivers both in 3d and 2d so the driver you need is "radeon" not fglrx try using that ;) btw...if you're using x86 3.4f I might suggest you switch to sabayon PE 1.1 and try the procedure to posted by wolfden to have compiz...there was a known bug that has been fixed on our new kernel, or you can try fixing your 3.4f installation by compiling again the kernel and enabling agpgart for your motherboard chipset

tks for the feedback guys, i've also tried 8,28 fglrx, and it says my X is not the right version. I've copied the xorg.conf from the live cd, same thing... I am using the driver "radeon" from the begining, i just tried fglrx to see if it would fix the problem. i get good framerates in glxgears, but glxinfo outputs "Direct rendering: off", i've also tries to modprobe -r fglrx, as i understand it conflicts with the "radeon" driver, but still no results.

So I'm using radeon driver, and i can't get no 3d accel, and i have no ideas.

What is agpgart ? and how does that help me ? i may try to recompile the kernel if u think that will help, but it's the same kernel that the livecd uses, and with that i have 3d accel and compiz out of the box, i don't understand why i can't have it in my installation :S

any other suggestions or clarifications would be apreciated

since you're not used with the kernel ,I suggest you get sabayon PE and follow wolfden guide to have acceleration
