Updating World - Program Problems

Post by lucknuts » Mon Oct 01, 2007 8:04

Ok, so I've only ran 2 commands so far.

By the way I am loving he 3.4f Mini. =] Even though I have both of them, the mini is helping me basically start from scratch.

Lovin' it...

Anyways.

Update the world with command emerge -auDN world

Then I get this huge error saying something is masked and won't finish.

Here is the output...below.....

localhost lucky # emerge -auDN world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating world dependencies -
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy ">=x11-base/xorg-server-1.4" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-base/xorg-server-1.4-r1 (masked by: package.mask)
- x11-base/xorg-server-1.4-r2 (masked by: package.mask)

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
(dependency required by "x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga-1.4.7" [ebuild])

!!! Problem resolving dependencies for media-plugins/gst-plugins-v4l
!!! Depgraph creation failed.

-----------------------------------------------

How do I go about dealing with this? Thank you.

If this was already posted, I searched forever, didn't find anything. My eyes hurt just reading everything.

Thanks again.

Well for one it is sticked at the top of this forum
http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewt ... 54&t=10188

http://gentoo-wiki.com/Masked <--but site is currently down
http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... tage_Guide <--has about masked packages

Remember a world update is going to have problems and one should know what he is doing and has properly edited the configs before even starting it.

I guess I seem to take my chances. Not like I have anything important on linux anyways.

Nothing works efficient enough yet to put anything on there.

Once I can configure properly, then I will think of everyday use.

As of right now, learning....

Thanks....

and Im reading where to go about looking to edit the mask and unmask files...

Tried, said it wouldn't let me save...

And I also tried emerge pidgin and that didn't work out to well either.

Program worked on full iso image, but now on the skimp it doesn't...

You have to have root access to edit configs. Go to console type su and then your root password and then run your commands. ... or go to k menu, system, more applications and file manager super user mode.

umm yea, you better learn how to do thing before a world update cause your in for a few bumps that you are gonna have to be able to figure out. I suggest just using the distro and learning how portage works by starting small, updating small things here and there than going for bigger updates. You are gonna have to know portage, you can't get around that. Editing config files should be a no brainer that you have to be root. They are very important files. You are gonna have to know how to update config files also, which ones are safe and which ones aren't.
