Why wont Thunderbird pick up my /.thunderbird files?

Postby ka9qlq » Mon Sep 10, 2007 19:13

I've run run mandrake, kubuntu, and now Sabayon 3.4e and never had a problem with Tbird picking up my /.thunderbird email accounts and files, but after installing Sabayon and emerging Tbird it keep trying to have me start from scratch and it adds a Local Folders-1 directory in the Mail directory :roll: so I unmerged Tbird out of frustration and
Code: Select all
waiting for lock on /var/db/.pkg.portage_lockfile

sat there all night then I tried remerge and
Code: Select all
Calculating dependencies  waiting for lock on /var/db/.pkg.portage_lockfile

is sitting there now. I even tried untaring the Tbird I got off thier web site and it does the same. I know Sabayon is more fussy then Kubuntu but this makes no sense.
Ideas?

Can't help much on the "waiting for lock" although I have found a reboot can clear it, but I've found the best way with Thunderbird is to backup the whole /.thunderbird/*.default folder, start Thunderbird from scratch and just cancel creation of accounts, then paste the contents of the backed up *.default folder into the new /.thunderbird/ *.default folder and overwrite everything. That has worked for me in 4 installations of Sabayon.

To get rid of the lockfile:
Code: Select all
rm /var/db/.pkg.portage_lockfile

Removing the lock file worked I emerged gkrellm no prob [well I did have to restart portato] but then I tried remerging Tbird an everything went fine until this

Code: Select all
>>> /usr/share/applications/mozilla-thunderbird.desktop
--- /usr/share/pixmaps/
>>> /usr/share/pixmaps/thunderbird-icon.png
>>> Safely unmerging already-installed instance...
waiting for lock on /var/tmp/binpkgs/mail-client/.mozilla-thunderbird-2.0.0.6.portage_lockfile

and it's been sitting there for 2 hours idle. Could emerge be having problems? Still can't try the Tbird fix till I can run it.

Was there a previous .thunderbird in your home folder? I found, after the first time I tried an upgrade rather a fresh install, that the only way to be sure I kept everything that I wanted was to have no trace of a previous installation of Thunderbird there.
Probably a silly question but have you tried emerging Thunderbird direct from a terminal rather than using a GUI emerge?

I tried emerging TB from a terminal and everything went smooth until this point and it just sits there

Code: Select all

>>> /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/res/ua.css
>>> /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/res/table-add-column-before-active.gif
>>> /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/res/table-remove-column-hover.gif
>>> /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/res/svg.css
>>> /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/res/table-add-row-after-active.gif
>>> /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/res/quirk.css
>>> /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/res/cmessage.txt
>>> /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/res/table-add-row-before-active.gif

>>> /usr/share/applications/mozilla-thunderbird.desktop

waiting for lock on /var/tmp/binpkgs/mail-client/.mozilla-thunderbird-2.0.0.6.portage_lockfile

as for the .thunderbird directory I've deleted it, let Thunderbird add it own, then moved the stuff over and nada. I have never had this kind of troble getting TB to pick up the .thunderbird dir. Mepis Thunderbird wanted /.mozilla-thunderbird so I just renamed it and tb worked fine then with Kubuntu I had to rename back to .thunderbird but it picked up the files [email, accounts, and extentions] fine. Ideas welcome

I'm stumped! I've looked back at my previous posts and see that I had a similar problem with Sabayon 3.26. I think at this point I'd do a complete re-install and start again.

Well I added all the accounts back by hand letting TB set up empty folders then go in to accounts setup and change where it looks for the files and it FINALLY picked them up and my address book but not the lists :shock: and I can't click links in email to open firefox :?: Crrrraaaaaaaazy
