New package installs take forevAr....

Post by rizob » Fri Sep 07, 2007 19:53

Hi all...

New to Linux and Sabayon - though i do love this OS and am constantly amazed at how many perhipherals work right out of the box, installing new packages in Kuroo seem to take way longer than the estimated time shown in the app.... eg:

note the 1 min estimated installation time and the 1 day of waiting i've been experiencing

is there anyway to speed this process up?

otherwise - thanks for a great release!

Sabayon: 3.4 x86
Dell 5150 (3ghz Pentium 4) 2GB ram

thanks for the quick response :)

i'm seeing how i would want to avoid kuroo if this is what i should come to expect from it....

do you know if portato is any better? simillar? will i have trouble installing portato with kuroo on the system already?

Is the slowness due to Kuroo, though, or to the fact that SL/Gentoo compiles source code? Would Portato be any faster than Kuroo? Surely they would take roughly the same time to emerge the same package?

It's the compiling - your building from source - it will take time no matter what you use.

i see...

and i think i just made a standard n00b mistake.... i gave up on waiting ;)

i aborted the installation @ the 1 day and 2 hr mark.... but kspread is now installed and working? waaa?

ok - well i guess i'll run in to another problem down the road for my impatience - s'ok though... kword has installed (very quickly) without any problems either

i wonder if it finished installing but just never progressed to the 'done' bit

i clearly need to research this topic more - but at least i know now that compiling from sources should take a very, very long time :)

thanks for the interest guys... i think i'm good

Kuroo is very buggy - it will often leave you hanging all the time

to be fair, i was multitasking like a mo-fo while it was installing, torrents and whatnot

i think i pushed it a little too far (even though this OS is so much more stable than XP) but i'm still new to Linux so sometimes i feel like that bull in a china shop people go on about...

i think most of the problems i have with kuroo (and SL in general) is just a lack of a greater understanding of the underlying principals - but i'm balls deep in it now and hoping to avoid Vista at all costs ;)
