first do as root in terminal:
emerge --sync && layman -S

then do (still as root):

emerge firefox

BUT BE WARNED. recompiling firefox could take up to 3 hours.

I think the package is called mozilla-firefox. Not sure if emerge accepts just "firefox."

emerge -s firefox should be able to tell. I'd be more specific but I'm at work, away from my Sabayon install. Hope this helps.

oh yeah, flick is right, the package name is mozilla-firefox (just check portage), so it is:
emerge mozilla-firefox
not
emerge firefox
but you can search the package by typing
emerge --search firefox
or any package for that matter.
i apologize for the misinformation.

Is mozilla-firefox-bin a pre-compiled version of the application? If so, for what architecture?

^Yes, it's a pre-compiled binary which you can emerge (and save lots of time). It's x86 (32-bit).
