I guess I would just skip that package for now and worry about it later, work on the other packages.

Questions?

Postby Red Knuckles » Thu Jul 05, 2007 20:26

I notice when I 'emerge -ep system' for instance some packages are listed in dark green and some are light green. What is the significance or this?

Also I did 'emerge -e system || until emerge --resume --skipfirst; do emerge --resume --skipfirst; done' and it froze up at '4 of 26' packages so I had to restart the system. I'm doing the last 29 in the 'emerge -ep system' list. Is there any way to find out which other packages failed without doing the whole process again?

Thanks for the reply Wolfden. I ended up doing a fresh install of x86_64 3.3 mini and have started over. I had no data or to worry about losing anyway.

I do wish they would not use the yellow

Postby rhomp2002 » Thu Jul 05, 2007 23:14

it is very hard to read. The other colors stand out pretty well but the yellow disappears when you try to read it. If they are going to read it at least make the background something that the yellow stands out against.

schivmeister wrote:btw, those of u who have successfully done it with the mini, how many packages does portage bring up during emerge -e world and final emerge -uvND world? i took a slightly different path when i was on 3.2, and i have yet to try on 3.3 because i've been lazy n not having much time.

I did fresh install of 3.3 AMD64 KDE mini and 'emerge -e system' was 138 packages. Then for 'emerge -e world' [running as I type this] I had to add '<=media-video/mplayer-1.0.20070622-r1' to '/etc/portage/package.mask' I got this message:

!!! Ebuilds for the following packages are either all
!!! masked or don't exist:
net-print/foomatic net-libs/linc x11-libs/libzvt sys-fs/raidtools dev-libs/dbh x11-base/opengl-update media-video/mplayer

and 1306 packages to emerge. WOW? For some reason emerging 'media-video/mplayer-1.0.20070622-r1' and it's required 'sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.19.2-r2' didn't work for me and I had to mask it. :?

Mini 3.3 is not going to be a fun one to update at all since it is old. It's easier to update the DVD instead of the mini cause the DVD has newer portage packages. Every thing in mini need to update.

I actually think updating from the mini is significantly easier than the DVD because there's so much less dependency hell. The DVD has so much crap installed that you'll spend forever trying to work out conflicts or removing stuff you don't want. If you start with the mini (it's like the perfect Gentoo live CD), you can add what you want, update everything, and be on your way with a nice, clean, lean, fresh system. ...And I feel like I have a lot less issues later on as well.

depends on how old the mini is, right now 3.3 mini has way more issues to world update than loop3. The longer you wait the more you have to deal with.
