VLC does not display video any more

Postby thenthenio » Tue Jul 03, 2007 22:21

Opening a video with vlc plays only sound.
In the Video menu the video track is disabled.
Selecting track 1 does not work (and rerunning it the video track is still disabled).
In Settings->Video tab Video output is enabled.
Doing emerge -C vlc and emerge vlc does not fix the issue.
Doing rm -rf .vlc does not work too.
Other players (mplayer, xine) work.

Any ideas?
Many thanks.

did you try recompiling (re-emerging)?
Did you update xine-libs lately? that may be the cause

Yes I tried to delete/reinstall vlc, also I deleted .vlc personal settings in my home.
Probably xine-libs updated during emerge world.
If this is the case, what can Ido?

Ciao.

usually recompiling does the job.
if you start vlc from terminal, does it give you any error messages? if so please post them

Very good (and simple) suggestion.
Why didn't I think about it?
Here it is.
DV files:
vlc capture001.dv
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
[00000545] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `dvsd'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
[00000534] main playlist: stopping playback

AVI files:
vlc Regionali.avi
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
[00000302] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `mp4v'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
[00000279] main playlist: stopping playback

It works with MPEG files.
I always thought that vlc contained all the decoders internally, in this case they would be fixed reemerging it, but this is not the case.
So, where are VLC video codecs?
What is the package to reinstall?

Many thanks for your help.

Ciao Mauro!

I have exactly the same problem!
Are you running 64-bit or 32-bit version?

I'm running AMD64 mini edition 3.3 but I've updated entire world and then emerge vlc... I cannot play avi files (neither DivX nor XVid)... The only thing Vlc seems to play are .wmv files
Oh, it also cannot play .flv files downloaded from youtube O_O'
I've tried re-emerging Vlc, ffmpeg, xine a couple of times but nothing happened...
Also revdep-rebuild notice nothing broken...

So I'm looking for a solution... Please help us!!! :D

My Vlc is version 0.8.6c...

Ciao Lomion.
I have exactly the same situation:
AMD64, emerged vlc, xine-libs, ffmpeg, but vlc fails loading avi and dv videos.
Other players (mplayer, codeine, kmplayer, xine, kaffeine, etc.) work correctly.

Please help us.

Ciao again Mauro!

I've found on VLC forum some useful commands... So try this:
Code: Select all
vlc -vvv --color --list |grep ffmpeg

And try to guess if VLC can load module ffmpeg.so -mine can't- so I guess THIS is the problem... Anyway, I've tried re-emerge again ffmpeg, nothing happened... Now I will unmerge and clean ffmpeg and then emerge it again... If this still won't fix this, I've seen some people have solved problem similar to ours by removing the .vlc directory in their home directory...

Give a try to theese... If not... Well, we'll see again here.

Cheers! (or, as we like to say in Italy "Saluti!!!" ;) )

Lomion

P.S: Forgot to say... My error is this:

Code: Select all
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus

Ciao Lomion!
Looks like we have to find the way ourself.
My output is:
$ vlc -vvv --color --list |grep ffmpeg
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
[00000001] main private debug: checking builtin modules
[00000001] main private debug: checking plugin modules

[00000001] main private debug: recursively browsing `modules'
[00000001] main private debug: recursively browsing `/usr/lib64/vlc'
[00000001] main private debug: recursively browsing `plugins'
[00000001] main private debug: module bank initialized, found 220 modules
[00000001] main private debug: saving plugins cache file /home/mauro/.vlc/cache/plugins-04081e.dat

As you can see there is no ffmpeg in this ouput, so it look like it can't load the module.
removing the .vlc directory was one of my first tries.
I already guessed this problem has something to do with ffmpeg in fact, more or less together, also ffmpeg started having jerky behaviours: Using ffmpeg as video processor in cinelerra actually makes cinelerra exit immediately all the times (before worked), trying to encode an mpeg video from an avi in konsole makes ffmpeg stop precessing at the fifth frame:
$ ffmpeg -i Regionali.avi -b 8600k -target dvd Regionali.mpeg

Press [q] to stop encoding
frame= 5 fps= 0 q=3.0 size= 238kB time=0.2 bitrate=12185.6kbits/s

Playing the resulting video in xine audio completes but video stops soon after start (5° frame).
I tried to reemerge ffmpeg but without luck.
Another thing I thought about is win32codecs, I saw that in the USE flags for vlc there is (-win32codecs) and if I try to force them to be included they remain out anyway (probably it is because of the brackets).
Probably win32codecs are forced out in a 64bit environment, the question is: what codec vlc used before this problem appeared (for AVI and DV files)?
Maybe ffmpeg used win32codecs too, and now they are both unable to do the job without them?
Let's stay tuned.
If I find anything I'll post it here.

Arrisentirci.

Mmm... I tried emerging Kmplayer and then I played an Avi file in it... You know, in KMplayer you can change the libs used to reproduce the video or audio by clicking on black space in video section and choosing "Reproduce with". My list conatins: ffmpeg, Gstreamer and Xine.

With ffmpeg no video or audio could have been played, with Xine I was able to watch the video AND hear audio... So I Think ffmpeg is the real problem for us... Not Vlc itself...

I've also tried re-emerging vlc with "w32codec" flag on, and the situation was the same... No w32codec flag was set, so I think is an AMD64 edition feature...
If you look at what packages are installed, you'll see there is "win32codec" and "amd64codec" installed... So I hope we will never mind about that.

Next step I will made in next days is to emerge an older version of ffmpeg... If it works (and I hope it will works  ) then I'll let you know ;)

Ciao!
