This happens more often. Due to solar flux, lots of radiobased-communications will not be possible for a certain amount of time. The duration could be from one to several hours, maybe even up to six or eight hours.

Don't panic...

OK, I'll take your word for it. Actually, mankind will have the planet trashed before then anyway so...

Edit: This guy is not only gay, but a whackjob looking to make a buck off of his stupid 'the sky is falling' video. Hey, if we are doomed, so be it, there is not much you can do about it if a 100 Metre tidal wave drowns you, just say your prayers.

<rant> This would (and regularly does) affect HF radio communications which use the Ionosphere to bounce signals off. Any other signals IE satellite would be unaffected. Satellite uses microwaves which are relayed by other satellites to ground stations. HF is very rarely used. To be fair all this would do is lower the Ionosphere so anyone using HF comms would only need to re-position thier antenna.
On the topic of a larger body removing our magnetic field. It would have to be something ridiculously strong (white dwarf / neutron star) passing very near by. If that happened the least of your worries would be solar flares. I used to study Physics to quite a high level, this kind of trite really annoys me. </rant>
