Full install on USB Flash drive?

Postby ArcherB » Thu Jan 11, 2007 1:38

I'd like to see Sabayon to be installable to a USB thumb drive. I know that others allow this, but it's still a "LiveCD" type install. With flash drives getting cheaper, a 4 GB USB drive should be enough to hold the OS, and still have the same hardware detection as the LiveCD, but one that is not compressed with writable directories.

I'm talking about a full HD-install with the LiveCD hardware detection on a portable drive.

Have you tried this out?
Code: Select all

You can save your changes and settings to your usb by typing "sabayon xsistence" at boot, this also works with the liveCD/DVD, if you have a usb present.

Oh yeah, and what's the difference between installing and using a liveCD/DVD?

I'll have to check that out. Thanx for the heads up.

Performance! A solid state drive running though a USB2 port is going to give you better performance that a CD/DVD and probably even a hard drive. It should also increase performance if the files are on the drive uncompressed and loose (not in a ISOFS file), which is kinda what I was looking for.

Overall general performance of large files is going to be faster on a platter drive than current SSD, not to mention the quicker throughput on say, SATA 3.0Gbps.
