@ArchitS, for Ubuntu, there was still the concept of elevated privileges. If you happen to look at bash/terminal commands, you'll find in ubuntu they will have things like

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
The 'sudo' part of that says "do this as the superuser".

In Gentoo/Sabayon, instead of typing sudo before everything, we allow you to simply do things as superuser (also referred to as root user).

Code: Select all

$ su
# apt-get update
# apt-get upgrade
^ That would be how Ubuntu would work if they did the same.

Yes it does, but sudo and su - have slightly different behavior and most guides for Sabayon/Gentoo are going to refer to doing things as root or superuser the standard Gentoo way. Rather than explain the intricacies of why you might want to do one over the other, I thought it best to simply lay out common practice.
