can't get Sabayon 14.08 kde 64 install or boot to desktop

Postby Marcus Howard » Mon Jul 28, 2014 0:05

I've burned two images first the daily build and then the monthly build, at first it seems to be loading fine but after the sabayon loading splash screen
I get a terminal like screen that says This is sabayon.unknown_domain (Linux x86_64 3.15.0-saybayon) 22:42:27
sabayon login:
so I enter root and press enter then it says
sabayon~#
at this point I don't know what to do if I don't press or enter anything the screen goes black but nothing else happens what am I
doing wrong? is there another step that I missed? I have a Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7223 laptop.

Code: Select all
I saw this, too. I could manually restart the X server, however:

Code: Select all
systemctl restart kdm

Replace kdm with whatever manager your flavor uses.

I don't know what the problem is, I burned like four disks trying to get this to work, I've checked and double checked the md5sum, checked the disk with k3b and I still get the same thing. I've ran the code "systemctl restart kdm" and nothing happened. I'm trying to install the kde version so I think kdm is the right manager I don't know what else to do.

Seems like a graphics card issue, have you tried xdriver=vesa in the grub ?

When you press F5, a pop-up window appears with a few kernel boot options. Press Esc. Notice that, below the last menu option, there is a line that says "Boot Options initrd=/boot/sabayon.igz aufs cdroot splash vga=791 quiet --". Just append xdriver=vesa (or any other kernel boot parameter(s) you want) to the end of that line (delete the double dashes) and hit Enter.

Okay I been running some tests, I have a Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7223 laptop that I use as my main laptop then I have another Toshiba Satellite C655-S5049. The first one it says has a processor with 2x AMD A4-3300 APU with radeon HD Graphics, The other says it has a processor with an intel Celeron(R) CPU 900 @ 2.20GHz and it doesn't have the Radeon HD Graphics it has a Mobile Intel GM45 Express Chipset. When I try to install Sabayon on the C655 laptop I still get the terminal but If I run the systemctl restart kdm command it works fine with no problems but when I try it on the L755D thats the one with the Radeon graphics I get problems so by process of elimination I'm thinking It might have something to do with the Radeon graphics.

ps both laptops are 64bit

I also had the same issue with the Radeon HD7750, so here is what I did:
So when you boot up, you should see the GRUB menu with Start Sabayon 14.08 KDE selected (depending on your image). You have two options here. The easy way would be to select Advanced Options and then disable kernel mode settings and then hit enter.
Or
Press e to edit
go to the line with linux /boot/sabayon aufs ...
change the line so it reads:
linux /boot/sabayon aufs cdroot splash quiet xdriver=versa vconsole.keymap....
So, as you will notice, the only thing we have added is the xdriver=versa to the above line
press F10 to boot

Either option above will get you booted back out to the terminal as you were before, but this time will be different.
#systemctl restart kdm
Done!

Alright, the above info is assuming that in your bios under boot, CSM you have UEFI Only. If you are using Legacy OpROM only then when you boot to the USB you will actually see the sabayon menu. At this point you can press F5 for additional parameters, select nomodeset using the space bar, esc back to the menu, and Start Sabayon 14.08. This will boot you out to the terminal and then you run the systemctl restart kdm
