Pipelight in Sabayon repo?

Postby Avanesov » Fri Aug 23, 2013 20:31

https://launchpad.net/pipelight
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pipelight

Pipelight = DRM + Silverlight via wine to watch Netflix and other protected video in a native Linux browser.

Has there been any discussion or plans to add Pipelight to the Sabayon repo's so it can be installed via equo? Most all of the googling I have done turns up Gentoo solutions that are not very streamlined yet.

Not in entropy so far: Sabayon Entropy Store: Found nothing while searching for: pipelight, you probably mispelled it.
Not requested so far: Sabayon Bugzilla: Zarro Boogs found.

But there are ebuilds in Gentoo Bugzilla: Bug 481596 - www-plugins/pipelight and in the furikake ovelay: Gentoo Portage Overlays - www-plugins/pipelight

So you could try to install it:
  1. using a local overlay,
  2. directly from furikake since you can get it with layman
or you could request it via Sabayon Bugzilla and wait until it gets to Entropy.

Yes, Pipelight is in Sabayon's repo. I've installed it, tested some with this:
http://fds-team.de/pipelight/
but it only works in Firefox for me, from Chrome 35, it is no more supported due to stop of support of NPAPI!
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/08/pipelight-use-silverlight-in-your-linux.html
You may also read this here:
http://fds-team.de/cms/articles/2013-08/pipelight-using-silverlight-in-linux-browsers.html
Check examples here:
http://bubblemark.com/silverlight2.html
and here:
http://www.iis.net/media/experiencesmoothstreaming
Important is that you'll need to have installed the plugin: user-agent-switcher (user-agent-override is recommended).

So, as I see it, you'll need only to install pipelight from repo. Then, I say this expressively, in a root console I started:
Code: Select all
pipelight-plugin --enable silverlight

And after this I've installed and open Firefox for the first time. Some downloads taking its time, were made. After finishing, I've switched to "Windows / Firefox 29" in user-agent-override menu. Then I have tested and got some good results.

Hope, I could help someone here interested in pipelight (silverlight) for streaming videos.

Here at least, you can download an older version of Firefox. For pipelight, it must! be less than version 30.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox

On your own system, you may also have a look into your directory (cd command):
Code: Select all
/var/lib/entropy/client/packages/packages/amd64/5/www-client

There should be files, which look like:
www-client:firefox-29.0.1.8782cad02e251fd2f61141b9aa5252d469582dd0~0.tbz2
If you also have a firefox-29.x then try to install it in a root console with with:
Code: Select all
equo install www-client:firefox-29.x.x*****
(You can use the Tab-key, but you must have typed the complete tbz2 file, only the *.tbz2 itself!)
I would remove the actual Firefox you just use now before installing version 29.
I'm rather sure, this is the reason, why your pipelight doesn't work. I had same (bad) experience with Chromium 35.

And yes, I'm conscious, that, when I mask Firefox in Sabayon, I do not get any more upgrades from Firefox, no safety fix and so on. But my pipelight works. This is my aim.

However, hope to help you.

Err but I did not have such an issue with firefox 30 on Ubuntu 14.04 so the need for an older version seems illogiclal.
I already got user agent overrider.
I mean really is there any fundamental difference between firefox on ubuntu and gentoo other then what it was built on?
No the issue seems to be from the lack of DRM in this version of piplelight nor does it seem to patch any issue.

Pls, read this. It's not about Ubuuntu or another Linux distro.
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/06/firefox-30-released-gstreamer-1-0-support
and here:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Plugins/Firefox_Whitelist

NPAPI support is neccessary for Pipelight.
