want to build from barebones, but dont want to gentoo.

Postby throdon » Sat May 24, 2014 2:36

hey guys, I haven't been around for a while. I want an archbang/crunchbang sort of sabayon. I really would like to know what ISO i need to download and the basic steps to get to an openbox situation.

downloaded ISO?
emerge --sync?
emerge openbox?
emerge tint2/lxpanel?
Also, is ethernet networking pretty much standard on the core/barebones ISO?

if i understood, you need a "simple" sabayon, in order to install only a simple openbox desktop, is this?

you want to use Sabayon's commands or gentoo (emerge) commands?

because in Sabayon is better and more easy to use the Sabayon commands (equo i package, instead of emerge package)

If that you want is really this, you can download Sabayon with small graphical interfaces, as Sabayon with only fluxbox, or even without graphical interface, for examples, these:

Sabayon Minimal, only with fluxbox:

http://na.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/sabayonlinux/iso/daily/Sabayon_Linux_DAILY_amd64_Minimal.iso

or Sabayon Spinbase, without graphical interface:

http://na.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/sabayonlinux/iso/daily/Sabayon_Linux_DAILY_amd64_SpinBase.iso

see here for the Official versions:

http://na.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/sabayonlinux/iso/

or here for the daily, more upgraded versions:

http://na.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/sabayonlinux/iso/daily/

YES, Network is nativelly supported in the Sabayon ISOs

for the commands, substitute:

Code: Select all
emerge --sync? SUBSTITUTE, USE equo up

emerge openbox?
emerge tint2/lxpanel?

Susbtitute both commands by :

equo i openbox tint2 lxpanel

the reboot and when you installed all that you want, substitute the gentoo's commands of emerge witth world options, by:

Code: Select all
equo u

Resuming for simple Sabayons, try Sabayon Spinbase or Sabayon Minimal

Thanks man. I didn't know 'equo' was availible from the start. I thought you had to update the gentoo aspects then install 'equo'.
I am not real fond of fluxbox, but can use it if it's a pain in the but to install xserver group.
I dont have a problem with the command line, I have installed Arch Linux many times.
I just want a barebones Sabayon to work with. LXDE being too heavy for my needs. I run on a hp mini(netbook).
so thanks for explaing the ISO i need I will try it out this weekend.

i fact, i dont use the minimal or the spinbase. Sometimes,i use gentoo also, bu my gentoo inst is XFCE.

i have in mind that equo command is enclosed in the spinbase and also in the minimal, since the equo is the command for Entropy, the main package manager in sabayon.

in you case, if you dont want fluxbox, you should use the spinbase ISO.
It not have graphical environ. I dont know if it had X or not. Verify.

for an "you manner" Sabayon:
Choose the SpinBase ISO. install it, normally, with the installer.

then check if it has entropy or not (equo s entropy), if command runs, it have entropy.

then: at first, update repos (equo up),after this, upgrade distro (equo u), then , cautionsly and without removing the deps, remove entropy:

# emerge -C --nodeps entropy equo rigo magneto

if you work without the option --nodeps, many things will be removed, since entropy have many dependencies. I have in mind that even portage may be removed.

or simply, mantain entropy but not more use it.

For this, edit the file /etc/entropy/client.conf, and in the line pseudo spmdowgrades, change disable to enable, this is important for compat, the use of Portage in Sabayon (if you will plain mantain the entropy package,s even you no more use entropy)

Now, you can install all the packages that you want, using only portage, example.

emerge -av openbox

after installed all that you want, you can update and upgrade all the system using gentoo standard commands.

in my case, my installations, i use Portage in Gentoo, and i use both installers in sabayon.
