Kernel 3.14 boot & graphics problems [Solved]

Postby kwacorn » Wed Apr 16, 2014 8:58

Using kernel-switcher I installed kernel 3.14 to both my fully equo upgraded laptop and desktop systems, however both systems are unusable with this kernel:
  • The laptop system fails to complete the boot process and hangs with a stopwatch mouse pointer displayed, that can be moved around but there is no response to any keyboard input and the power has to be forced off. The desktop system however does complete the boot process.
  • On both systems the graphics is messed up, there appears to be a failure to detect the screen size or resolution resulting in very large text and icons. On the desktop system the screen size is set as 1024x768 (or similar) instead of its actual 1440x900 size and hence a large portion of the display is missing.
The laptop and desktop are different hardware, The laptop is AMD cpu and ATI graphics based and the desktop Intel cpu and graphics, possibly implying the kernel problem is independent of the hardware, hence I would not be surprised to hear of others having problems with this kernel.

Is there anything I might be able to do to further identify the cause of the problem?
Are there any configuration file or other changes that might fix the problem?

Luckily I have retained kernel 3.13 and I am able to boot and use both systems with that kernel, so waiting for the next bug-fix kernel release of 3.14.1 may be a better or easier option?

I saw a similar issue with the original 3.14 kernel.

3.14-r1 seems to have resolved it.

Installed kernel 3.14, gave me screen resolution problems, so I uninstalled it and went back to 3.13, waiting for kernel 3.15! :)

Same problem w 3.14 (ATI graphics,AMD), after booting I can see my wallpaper (Xfce) but can't login (no mouse/keyboard)...anyway, moved back to 3.12.

edit: linux-sabayon-3.14.1 is working, no problems anymore.

I am glad to report that after equo upgrade with the Sabayon-weekly updates, for 27th April 2014, kernel 3.14-r1 was installed and, as reported by others, has fixed the boot up problems with kernel 3.14 :D
