I was trying to set up HDMI sound on my Lenovo y510p today. I ran into something that perplexed me. In the Audio Setup settings (KDE), I could use the Front Left and Front Right test sounds properly i.e. they played on my TV's connected speakers. The audio from the desktop continued to come from my laptop's speakers. What additional steps are needed to get the desktop audio on my connected speakers over HDMI?
Install PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) if not already installed, launch it and click on the Configuration tab, then select the HDMI Output profile. (And select 'Off' for the the Built-in Audio if you don't want sound to come out of your laptop's speakers too.)
