Black stripe on KDE splash screen [Solved]

Postby msdobrescu » Mon Jul 29, 2013 19:33

Hello,

The latest updates (14?) bring a new look and a new bug. It's not even medium, but it's still a bit annoying.
The KDE splash screen has the wrong resolution again, on my Asus N76VZ. In effect, the display - having 1920x1080, has a consistent black stripe in the bottom area. After that, it's ok, the KDE expands on all the screen.
I have similar issue on my 1280x1024 monitor, on another machine, but there the bottom area is full of scrambled images.

My buddy's computer has this too. I wasn't able to figure it out in the short time I had with it.

Neither do I. Most likely, the wrong image is chosen.

I noticed the same thing, also with a resolution of 1920x1080. I did some digging around in the theme files (located under /usr/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/Sabayon). There are different subdirectories for different resolutions, each with its own background.png file. Presumably the ksplash engine chooses chooses the background image closest to your actual screen resolution and scales it to fit. The problem seems to be that the background image resolutions do not match the directory names (eg /usr/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/Sabayon/1600x1200/background.png has resolution 1600x900 and /usr/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/Sabayon/1920x1200/background.png has resolution 1920x1080), which results in the background image being incorrectly scaled.

I renamed the 1920x1200 directory to 1920x1080:
Code: Select all
cd /usr/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/Sabayon/
su
mv 1920x1200 1920x1080
exit

and that seems to have fixed the problem. I'm not sure how well that would work for different resolutions though. Perhaps renaming all the directories to match the resolution of the corresponding background.png will solve it, though in some cases it might be better to scale background.png.

My bottom area is also scrambled (screen resolution 1920x1200) and renaming the directory solves it for me.

Has anyone filed a bug report on this yet?

Edit: I found the bug report https://bugs.sabayon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3496 .
It should be great if they could fix this since the solution is quite simple.

My lcd screen is a 1600 x 900 resolution, black stripe at the bottom of my screen shows up too in sabayon kde splash screen, but since my sabayon is booting and working fine  I don't think this is something to worry about and carry on with my life! :salut:

I can't stop thinking that it tries reading some more memory than it should, or overrides something...possibly. This could lead to issues in certain circumstances...

Thanks for this. This was bugging me too. I hope it gets fixed in the ISOs eventually too!

I have the stripe with the default splash screen also, so I just changed to the SimpleSmall splash screen and the stripe has gone.
