UEFI and Sabayon 14.01 LiLi install

Postby pinkytoes » Sun Mar 02, 2014 22:42

hi everyone, new to Sabayon but Heron/Lynx kept me happy since '08
mostly coz i lessthanthree ume-launcher on my cute little white eeepc.
i just got an acer v5 571p with UEFI, and my plan was to dual boot with W8
but i found out the hard way that my savvy just isn't tech enough yet. >_>

so i took the plunge, waved goodbye to W8, and let Anaconda have her way with him.
i was hoping getting sabayon working would let me train up for dual-boot boss status.
the sad ending to the story is that after the 'You Win!' successful install splash screen...
Nothing. operating system not found. the boot repair process didn't help at all either.

i guess this belongs more on the shameless noob questions board.
what i needed was to rtfd (dictionary) instead of re-reading the manual.

GUID = globally unique identifiers (id's)
GPT = GUID partition table
which turns out is part of UEFI
leading me right back to this site.

this topic: https://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=21003
took me from giving up to burning the midnight oil over this tonight. (:
the only hitches were that gparted doesn't do efi format partitions
but anaconda has a pulldown for that in the edit partition pop-up.

the only choices for mount points during the anaconda install are:
</> </boot> <boot/efi> </home> </tmp> </usr> </var> </usr/local> </opt>
there is no option to mount to /data, so i used /usr instead
i will mount to /usr/share in entropy to keep /usr/local safe from harm

now i just need to learn how to get nm-applet working so i can have internet
so that i can go back to only carting the one computer around all day. ^_^

For manually partitioning you can type mount point field manually ;) just make sure you have partition available

so, a few months after successfully wrestling sabayon
onto my acer v5 571p, im trying again with acer e1 572p.
i was really hoping all of the lessons hard learned then
would translate to an easy install this time around. >.<

the good news is that the network card on the e1
is supported so the install can make use of wifi.
following the wiki page for grub2 and uefi
i gparted the following partition table:

but when the install asks for the mount points,
because gparted used gpt it prompts for /boot/efi
and then prompts to format as efi partition not ext2.
giving the functioning partition table from the v5:

the problem is that everything is exactly the same on the e1
as it is on the v5, but on final reboot it goes into shim key menu
and denies all available .efi files as Invalid X509 certificate.
the live usb will boot with efi or legacy now as well. o_O

i don't know if this is why it finally worked
but leaving the usb plugged in until the reboot
finished coincided with the install finally taking.
contrary to the walk through in the wiki. fyi.
