Help my sabayon is dead after yesterdays update [Solved]

Postby rekinchin » Mon Feb 03, 2014 21:10

I am sending this via the dreaded windows as my attempt to start my laptop this evening leaves me with a blank screen after the blue sabayon flash on boot up. The system is not dead as I can use the power button to power off but I nothing else happens. I did the auto update last night and it had completed in the morning when I then powered off to go to work.

Can anyone give me any idea how to find out what has happened?
Can I revert to prior the update?

Thanks
Robert

Try hitting alt + ctrl + F7 to see if it's just not switching to the right virtual terminal. If that doesn't do anything, try alt + ctrl + f2 (or another F+number) to get to a plain terminal. Log in as root and check to make sure you didn't leave a config file update undone:
Code: Select all
# equo conf update

Finally, if that doesn't fix anything for you, let's take a look at what init system you are using:

Code: Select all
# eselect init list

And we can do more investigating from there.

Hi stupot
Nothing to do from equo
System Init has a * next to systemd so I expect that is the imp being used

Something's else that I remember this morning. The update said that there was an unsupported app and I was to check it. I assumed that I was to uninstall. There were a number of dependancies mentioned. Then I tried to check the config difference it said it's made. But kwrite claimed a part was missing. I had ran out of time a that point and shut system down

Which DE are you using? KDE? GNOME? Other?

We can try installing a high level DE package which should pull in any missing dependencies if for some reason they were accidentally removed.

For instance, if you use kde, try installing kdebase-meta, which should make sure everything needed for kde to run is installed. For GNOME: gnome-base/gnome

I cannot get access to any repro's. I guess I don't have access to Internet. The only way I can get a shell is through grub recovery mode. I have connected directly to my modem so not using wifi. But may not have http

I've run into issues similar to this before. See if this doesn't help you out:

Boot into Safe Mode. At some point during the safe mode boot it will ask you to try and continue to boot the desktop to stop there. You'll want to stop there. Log in as root. Then we'll need remount root to have write access and start up networking management:
Code: Select all
# mount -n -o remount,rw /
# systemctl start NetworkManager.service

At this point, you're at a working terminal with networking working. So, let's go ahead and fetch the latest from the entropy repo and have it perform some library checking.

Code: Select all
    # equo update
    # equo upgrade
    # equo deptest
    # equo libest

Once you have your networking working, you should be able to install whatever. Make sure there isn't some unfinished upgrades by doing an equo upgrade and then use equo to attempt to reinstall anything else that might be missing as I mentioned before.

Huh. I suggest trying to jump onto the IRC channel to get live help. This is looking much more complicated than what I can reasonably handle using the forums.
