Updates pushed today had kernel updates in it [Solved]

Postby gocool » Mon Jul 22, 2013 18:34

I thought the kernel updates will not be pushed through with equo. We have to do a kernel-switcher to do any kernel updates. It came as a surprise to see th kernel updates when I gave

#equo update && equo upgrade --ask

Code: Select all
>>
>>
>>    # (46/57) [sabayonlinux.org] sys-kernel/linux-sabayon-3.4.53
>>     Versions: 3.4-r6 / NoTag / 1 ===> 3.4.53 / NoTag / 1
>>      Action:          Upgrade
>>    # (47/57) [sabayonlinux.org] sys-kernel/linux-sabayon-3.7.10
>>     Versions: 3.7.10 / NoTag / 3 ===> 3.7.10 / NoTag / 4
>>      Action:          Upgrade
>>
>>

I tried to go ahead with the installation. But it failed with the following error..

Code: Select all
>>    ## Installing package: sys-kernel/linux-sabayon-3.4.53
>>    ## [Official Sabayon Linux Standard kernel image]
!!! copy /var/tmp/entropy/packages/x86/5/sys-kernel_linux-sabayon-3.4.53.facadb26ad7b7b8c350c3669c941c170022d7150_0.tbz2/image/boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86-3.4.0-sabayon -> /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86-3.4.0-sabayon failed.
!!! IOError(28, 'No space left on device')

You still have old kernels installed, and your /boot partition is full!

Thanx Lxnay.

I moved one version of kernel from /boot and updated the other version manually.
Then moved back the kernel and did an upgrade. And it worked.

But this should not have happened, I am not sure how did it end up like this. I just have kernels 3.4 and 3.7. I thought the volume manager is smart enough to partition it in such a way that there will be enough space for multiple kernels to co-exist.

I think equo upgrades minor versions automatically, i.e. 3.4.x to 3.4.x while major version upgrade must be made manually, i.e. 3.x to 3.x. However, that wasn't working proberly with Sabayon 9/10 (don't remember exactly which versions) where the kernel was always upgraded to the highest version.
