Slow Mirror

Post by nomad » Wed Mar 20, 2013 22:04

Took over six hrs to perform the standard update as notified by updater. The first mirror picked was mirror.de.sabayon.org and its speed was lower than 20 kb/sec, averaging between 12-15 kb/sec. Installing something as simple as 'vim' took over five minutes to d/l at that same slow speed.

The bandwidth limit on the mirror was reached, see: viewtopic.php?p=160384#p160384

Not sure if equo repo mirrorsort <repo> will help, give it a try.
If it doesn't work, edit /etc/entropy/repositories.conf manually and move the mirror to the beginning of the list.
Last entry corresponds to fastest mirror.

More config file editing...

Anyway, I have no list in that config file. It only contains:

official-repository-id = sabayonlinux.org

You don't really want to hear my honest answer for that…
just can tell you, that Linux is not Windows.

You could use the sample files provided in /etc/entropy/repositories.conf.d/
or just open the wiki and grab the list of mirrors there: En:Repositories - Sabayon Wiki

Actually sorting the mirrors solves the issue, see: Why equo so slow?
If you don't like doing things on the command line, the task can be accomplished with just a few clicks using Rigo.

Metatopic continue here?

Sorry for the Off-Topic, but I do really enjoy supporting via CLI. One benefit of Linux in my view.
However, if you like the GUI way, write a blog and attach your screenshots there. Then you can point users to your blog.

For me a

Code: Select all

equo repo mirrorsort sabayonlinux.org
really helped.
After it, my download rates increased a lot...
What I dont know, is, do I need to do always after (re)boot or not.

No, you should only need to do it once. Only do it again if your speeds are bad again. Keep in mind, mirrors are not necessarily consistent. What works great this month might not work very nicely next month.
