ATI Radeon 4870 discontinues support / [Solved]

Postby notzippy » Mon Jul 16, 2012 16:53

Hi

According to the last update "ATI Radeom HD 2XXX/3XXX/4XXX propriety drivers will no longer be available, and we should switch to the open source version. ", I am disappointed by the opensource driver as there is no 3d support or webgl native support. So I am looking to upgrade my video card - any suggestions on what to upgrade to ? Looking for dual monitor support, with hardware 3d, webgl support, and obviously a driver that is supported by linux..

BTW I found this http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pa ... ducts.aspx according to that it appears that there is support for ACCC for version 12.6

any suggestions would be appreciated
thanks

Who told you there is no 3D support in the Open Source driver? Last time I used it, 3D support worked fine.

I followed the instructions on removing the proprietary drivers
install xf86-video-ati
remove ati-drivers
remove file /etc/gpu-detector.conf
reboot

But looking at /etc/X11/xorg.conf it appears that file still references the old drivers

How can I fix this or reset these settings ?

Followed those instructions and things appear to be a way better display wise (moving windows no longer jerking across screen), but opengl still seems to be disabled ie none of the GL Screen savers are working.
Any other ideas on things I could check for ?
glxinfo
name of display: :0

Major opcode of failed request: 150 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12

I also tried to eselect opengl set xorg-x11 , which locked up x11 on startup. (Rebooted into recovery mount -o remount,rw / and eselect opengl ati allowed me to start X again

If eselect opengl set ati allowed you to start X Windows again then you are still using the Closed Source FGLRX (AMD Catalyst) driver. Make sure you have uninstalled ati-drivers and ati-userspace, delete (or move) the xorg.conf file (see The X Server Configuration HOWTO - 3. Configuring Xorg), enter the command eselect opengl set xorg-x11, use the eselect mesa commands to set all the OpenGL drivers to classic, then reboot.

See also the thread X-Server fails to start after latest updates (16/07/2012) (http://lists.sabayon.org/pipermail/deve ... /date.html).

Removing ati-userspace removed the option from eselect opengl list. But after a reboot I still did not get any further - as soon as the login screen attempted to appear the the system froze. (I could still move the mouse but it was a jerky motion on the screen) Only keyboard commands I could get to work was REISUB. I finally was able to start X again by installing the ATI drivers in recovery mode. Anything else I could check for ?

Some mesa commands did not have a classic version
