New to Sabayon: first impressions

Post by dan34 » Fri Jun 08, 2012 18:20

I recently installed Sabayon to try it out. I used Gentoo a few years ago and am currently using Arch Linux. So far I like Sabayon, but I noticed that it is noticeably slower to start up and shut down. With Arch the time from grub to login screen is 22.6 seconds, while with Sabayon it takes 41.6. Shutdown time is 12.5 in Arch and 47.3 seconds with Sabayon. I am curious about why this is.

Most of the time is taken by the initramfs.
However, I think we do support more filesystem configurations (lvm, encryption, etc) than Arch and this requires extra time.
Who cares about boot time when there's software suspend?

Hi hydra, welcome to Sabayon Linux.
Boot from USB is going to work if you use dd from the ISO file to your USB stick.

This is  the first Gentoo distro I have tried; I am blissfull!!
Have been using Bodhi Linux since it started and will use it occasionally.
This is amazing; clean, fast (64 bit) and just challenging enough to keep me on
my toes. This may be the OS that finally lets me dispose
of Windows completely. Also have used Mepis, Mint and buntus of flavors.
As long as I was installing a new hdd, I went with a new OS.
Both choices were brilliant.
Will be donating after a few more days of testing.

Thank you for the great work.
Sabayon 9, Gnome 3

I too am surprised at the speed with KDE. Most KDE distros are fairly slow. I am downloading the XFCE version now, I expect it to very fast as well.
