Mine did that too. Try turning the notifications off. When that used to pop up, my plasma crashed. After turning it off, it's been fine for days.

Fresh install Sabayon 8 amd64 K
Using Sulfur loaded limbo repo and updated equo (accepting other depended packages) closed sulfur
Opened sulfur updated to kde 4.8 by selecting all packages for kde-base and kde-misc (accepting depended packages)
Updated remaining packages

Desktop ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus, AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 5200, 4 Gb RAM, GeForce 9500 1GB
This system is used as a multimedia system and is connected to a 42" Plasma TV
Did not crash when inserting or removing usb drive but did crash on log out (shutdown - restart) after update to kde 4.8 but before updating remaining packages
Once remaining packages had been updated then crashed when inserting or removing usb drive

Notebook HP C700 Intel(R) Celeron(R) M CPU 530 @ 1.73GHz 2 Gb RAM,GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller
Installed Sabayon 8 amd64 K on to a Maxtor 250 GiB external drive (on first boot had to change root=UUID to root=/dev/sdbx)
Crashed when inserting usb stick and/or when mounting or safely removing partition from Maxtor 250 GiB external drive

Notebook HP CQ61-311AX, AMD CPU M320, 4 Gb RAM, Radeon HD 4300 512 MB
Using the Maxtor 250 GiB external drive
Inserting usb stick made X crash going back to login screen

Other tests with main desktop (system from my first reply)
Desktop ASRock 880G AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T, 4 Gb RAM, GeForce 9500 1GB
Removed add on usb 3 card still had crash when inserting usb drive
Disabled internal usb3 still had crash when inserting usb drive
Removed GeForce 9500 and enabled ati radeon 4300 crashed when inserting usb stick
Reset bios to defaults (still crashed)
Cleaned lint and dust from all fans and heat sinks reinserted GeForce 9500 crashed when inserting usb stick

Four different machines all crashing when inserting a usb stick
Had no luck with disabling notifications in systray (if that was what lhuser was referring to)

I see that KDE 4.8.0 is now in the main repository. I for one am interested in seeing how the general population of Sabayon users will fare with this update. I myself will refrain from updating to what I have found to be a buggy release, for the foreseeable future.

Installed 4.8.0 about 2 hours ago and apart from having to login twice (plasma froze the first time) all has seemed well in that 2 hours.
That is for my AMD 46 system, my x86 is updating at the moment;

Linux haymode 3.2.0-sabayon #1 SMP Sat Feb 11 08:52:29 UTC 2012 x86_64 AMD
Phenom(tm) II X2 550 Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
4GB memory
nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9500 GT]
Creative Labs CA0106 Soundblaster
Viewsonic 1280x1024 Refresh 50

Edit
Everything appears OK on the x86 system too.

Dell Inspiron 530 Intel Core 2 duo E8400 3.0Ghz 4.00 GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT 512MB RAM Dell S2309 23" widescreen monitor 1920x1080
@60Hz
Samsung HD 642JJ ATA 650 GB Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200 S ATA TST DVD ROM TS-H353B
ATA
Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) Logitech
wireless keyboard and mouse

Further Edit:
I have now had a crash of plasma workspace. It happened when trying to sort out dolphin to be useable and while I had a phone attached to download photographs. The recovery was very quick and I would only have seen the KDE error reporter if I'd turned away for a second.
I have saved .xsession-errors for this session but it's the most unfriendly log and I have no idea what I'm looking for. Are there any specific logs that would help?

Updated completely to 4.8.0 earlier. All very smooth,no problems so far. Have tried mounting and unmounting a selection of USB sticks, drives etc. and run through all my usual procedures with no crashes.
So in short. VERY PLEASED.

Well it was fine again, until there was some "updates" that actually was consisting of KDE 4.7.4, then after reboot, I lost a screen, Gnome and Metacity won't start....

I;m removing all things consisting of KDE from console and will log back in to see if Gnome works so I can finish the rest.

Update: Looks like I've crippled it alot. I didn't want to uprade to Sabayon 8 since everything was working the way I wanted, but looks like I got no choice to now...ah well...looks like there's interesting stuff in version 8, so it's probably time to give it a shot.
I'll install it on my laptop as well, since Chakra's too weird. It's lacking a lot of packages and it doesn't even have Wine and compiling it requires dependencies that it doesn't even have, so I'm not going to go to dependency hell just for that.

Now that I have updated everything, I have the same issue with plasma crashing, on the release version (weekly).
It did not work until I have renemed the .kde home folder.
That's it, KDE strikes again and again.
It happens to me all the time, when I perform a KDE upgrade.
There is one exception, when I have upgraded from KDE 4.7 the last time before 4.8.
Anyway, I will spend a day to redo my desktop settings, which is very unproductive.
Is in really not possible a way to import the previous settings?

I've had these sort of problems before on various systems. So now I backup and make copies of the /.kde4/share/config/plasma* files.
I do this immediately I have the system up and running, then when things go awry I just copy them over the existing ones and log in again.

I backup the settings too.
When I compare the old vs the new ones, it's a great difference.
And this is regular, but they should import the old settings in order to avoid the crashes.
Now, I try to find how to import my old desktop setting manually.

I've spent many many hours trying to compare the files, cutting and pasting etc. and it has always been nesscessary to copy the complete file. A mystery to me on the exact problem. I'm pretty quick a resetting the desktop now even without restoring the the files.
