Ralink 3090 [Solved]

Postby plutosams » Mon Oct 17, 2011 21:35

I cannot find a way to enable my rt3090 wireless driver. Wlan0 does not appear in iwconfig. Other forums suggested adding the firmware from RAlink in /lib/firmware. The file was already there, I tried placing the new file there and still no luck. I have tried downloading the driver from Ralink, but cannot get the file to make. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank goodness for the Fusion kernel! After looking in many different forums (sabayon, gentoo, fedora, even ubuntu) I was getting very discouraged. Rereading the release notes for Sabayon 7 it mentioned the Fusion kernel having wireless next drivers. I installed the new kernel, without any other modifications and suddenly my card popped up and I was able to connect. I am not sure how I would go about fixing this without installing the fusion kernel (possibly installing compat-wireless); however installing the kernel was quite simple for anyone else with this issues (a lot of newer netbooks).

I expect it fixed in the next kernel release.

I had exactly the same problem on my u210 running SL6 and managed to fix the problem. Not sure if my approach still works on SL7.

The problem was the SL looked for /lib/firmware/rt3090.bin and that file was not present. But firmware for rt3090 is the same as for rt2860 (and similar chips). And rt2860.bin is already present in /lib/firmware.
So you have 2 solutions:
1) make symlink named rt3090.bin (in /lib/firmware) and point it to rt2860.bin.
2) make a copy of rt2860.bin and rename the copy into rt3090.bin

Here is the link to the corresponding SL bug: https://bugs.sabayon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2258

Hi imu96, welcome to the Sabayon Forums,
you can get the fusion kernel directly from entropy, you can use kernel-switcher to help you installing it, see:
Code: Select all
kernel-switcher help

You have to be root to switch to the appropriate kernel.

Happy New Year.
