VLC cannot play any file.No suitable decoder module [Solved]

Postby Richlion » Sun Nov 20, 2011 12:11

Hello,

after last nights updates VLC cannot play any .wmv file - no codecs found. Can this be somehow fixed?
Mp4 files cannot be played:
Code: Select all
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "mp4v". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

Opening .wmv files:
Code: Select all
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "WMA2". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "WMV3". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

Same problem here. Since the update, VLC doesn't support most of the formats it did just a few days ago. I can get a few videos in my collection to play, but just a few. My AVIs, MKVs, and FLVs won't play at all. More than half of my WMVs play, though. This is not the VLC I know and love. I logged in on Windows and VLC plays all of them perfectly.

Hope this is fixed soon...

The problem is back with the yesterdays update.
Trying to play .wmv file, got just audio and no video. The error message is:
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "MSS2". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

@aquarius: using 64 bit? 64-bit versions of Linux multimedia players cannot play .wmv files that use the MSS2 codec
In Fitzcarraldo's blog you can read how to play such files with wine:
How to play MSS2 codec (Windows Media Video 9 Screen) .wmv files in 64-bit Linux
